Wireless carriers continue to decrease their own costs and equipment footprints, while in the same time, increasing efficiency in call processing... and charging customers MORE.

Each year the profit scales for wireless carriers increases EXPONENTIALLY.
Got some data to prove that? I doubt their profits increase year over year exponentially.

I only get 300 mins a month with Virgin Mobile, but I got unlimited data. and I got on the $25 plan before the rate hike, so I'm set.

Now, i gotta look at getting one of their 3g mobile internet modems for $60, and getting cheap internet on a laptop.
It's actually only $50 now for a HPSA+ data connect card, jck. That's a 5GB cap, and it's only $10 per GB you go over. That may sound like a lot for some, but in the past it was like $50+ per GB over. c:

Anyway people, learn2becheap. Here's how I do it:
- Get 2 phone's with 200MB dataplan on each
- Sign up for Google Voice, get a phone number, use it for texting and tell your friends to text you at that number.
- Disable texting to your regular phone number.
- Use wifi whenever it is available (which is 99% of the time for the places I am typically at)
- Pay $95/month for two phones with data and texting.

$50 base + $10 for 2nd phone + $15 + $15 for two data plans = $90 + $5 taxes and fees = $95
Actually, what is amusing to me is that people get up in arms about something no one is forcing them to buy. I find it hilarious when people that aren't even customers of AT&T, start complaining about how "unfair" and "expensive" their service is.

Um, no one is putting a gun to your head forcing you to become an AT&T customer. There's many other options out there for you to pick from.

"I've used them forever, and now they're horrible!!" Uh, no, they aren't. You're just cheap. But, it's okay, you can be. It's allowed.

Doesn't surprise me anymore. The only carrier that actually seems to be more on the customer side is Sprint. $105 ish gets you 450 minutes, unlimited data, unlimited text and unlimited tether.

Meh, drop the tether and $69 ($79 if it's an android phone) gets you 2,000 minutes to landlines, unlimited mobile to mobile (on any carrier), unlimited text and unlimited data.

I've been saying this forever - not just texting; but all services wireless carriers provide cost them WAY less than it costs you and they ought to be shut down for EXTREME price fixing.

Specious argument, and I guess "many" means two in the US.

Either legislation needs to be put in place to control this three ring circus, or there needs to be a non-Bell carrier to rise up and basically focus on mobile broadband as an internet service. Mobile broadband is basically a premium feature at the moment. I think the approach should be a $50-$100 per month for unlimited, pro-tethering internet service. This approach would compete not only with cell companies, but with home ISPs as well. 4G lte is faster than what's available to most Americans (and even 3G speeds is sufficient for many Americans). I just don't know what kind of infrastructure a company would need to build in order to support this amount of bandwidth going on (mobile broadband bandwidth is beans compared to what comcast and other home ISPs push).

I think in the next year or two, Google and Apple will invest in mobile broadband. They recognize that the trend is moving from PC's to smartphones, and I think they'll want to control the environment on all three levels: hardware, software, and carrier levels.

I don't understand your line of thinking....people generally detest price gouging and they dislike cheap tactics like this, regardless if they use it or not and regardless if it affects them, be it gas, milk or phone.

At one point yes, but then they decided to buy TMO.
