Why change your business model when idiots will pay for it? Main reason I don't use ANYTHING linked to Apple including Itunes.

Though to be fair ANY company can be like Apple, its up to the consumers to ensure they can't though. I just for some reason have a special hatred of Apple.
Where did Apple come into this? I mean I dislike Apple's business practices as much as the next guy, but this has absolutely nothing to do with Apple. AT&T didn't become "evil" as soon as they won the battle for the iPhone contract, this is how AT&T has always been. Please take off you Apple hate blinders for a second and look at this as though Apple wasn't even a partner with AT&T, because they have nothing to do with it.

I left them last month. Customer of 30+ years. I'll never go back to them.

$49.99 for phone...+$30 more for unlimited everything data...

I only get 300 mins a month with Virgin Mobile, but I got unlimited data. and I got on the $25 plan before the rate hike, so I'm set.

Now, i gotta look at getting one of their 3g mobile internet modems for $60, and getting cheap internet on a laptop.

They could send the text on the data signal instead but don't want to do that because then all you would need is a data plan. Also lets not forget Google voice over the data stream. Caps help kill that idea. Logically you could just pay for an unlimited data plan and use Google voice and a text messaging app off the market.

This is what I was thinking about doing but the problem is(I think) anybody you want to text has to have the app installed and have a data plan since it's going over the data stream. Imagine if everybody got in on this and just used the text apps for texting and Google voice for calls? The telcos would **** themselves.
If you use Textfree or Heywire the receiver does not need to have the app installed to receive the sms. it comes in as a regular text....

This is news? All carriers have been overcharging for text messages. Heck, the same goes for minutes.

Google should start their own wireless broadband service. No paying for minutes (what is this, 1999?). No paying for texts (what is this, 2006?). Just pay a fixed amount for wireless broadband and everything else that carriers charge for will be implemented in Google Voice. I mean, look at the upgrade features page of your cell company's website...everything there costs the carrier no money to offer and basically exists to gouge you and/or is already implemented in google voice.

The title of this thread is extremely misleading.

AT&T is just removing the $10/1000 text plan. Nothing else has changed.

Lol, funny. And yet everyone gets all up in arms about it, as if AT&T hadn't already been ripping them off.

Anyway people, learn2becheap. Here's how I do it:
- Get 2 phone's with 200MB dataplan on each
- Sign up for Google Voice, get a phone number, use it for texting and tell your friends to text you at that number.
- Disable texting to your regular phone number.
- Use wifi whenever it is available (which is 99% of the time for the places I am typically at)
- Pay $95/month for two phones with data and texting.

$50 base + $10 for 2nd phone + $15 + $15 for two data plans = $90 + $5 taxes and fees = $95

How exactly does that save you money? What exactly is the point of this?

I think the assumption is that it's for 2 people in a family--instead of having to get an SMS package for each phone (in addition to data), he can just use the 200MB data connection in conjunction with google voice for sending/receiving text messages, and not have to pay for an SMS package for each phone line.

I was confused as to the point of the second phone at first, but then I just assumed that it was for another family member.

You'd be able to do the same thing with a single line.

I read this the other day, and found it's logic lacking. Why can you send SMS without 3g turned on, but not send IMs without 3g? Because they are transmitted on two separate systems. Comparing charges on one to the other is ridiculous. And check my previous posts on telecoms. I hate them, and am not defending them.
