WinCE 7.0 any good?

Thread Starter
I have noticed that there seems to be a fair bit of bias against WinCE. But I was thinking of ordering one of those navigation units off ebay for my car, and I noticed that a some of them are quite affordable these days. I also noticed that many of them are running Windows Embedded Compact. AKA WinCE. WinCE 7.0 just came out in march, and I was hoping some of you here had some experience with it and give me a little feedback. Any likes or dislikes? Or should I avoid it altogether?

I am looking for a navigation unit with quality bluetooth pickup/sound/playback. Also a good navigation unit, and a fast interface. I went to car toys and noticed some of them had slow interfaces that didn't belong in a car because when your driving you need that stuff to switch screens fast.

As far as I know, WinCE 6 is just Windows Mobile 6.0 without the phone functionality. I could be totally wrong though.

If that's the case I never minded Windows Mobile except for the total lack of updates. My last phone was great when I got it but when the web moved on and my phone didn't it ceased being a decent smartphone. But it distinctly felt like Windows with a Start Menu, task bar, windows, and true multitasking.

All I know about it is they put it on netbooks that are not fit to use as paperweights.

Windows mobile was based on Windows CE 5. The zune hd was based on 6 (massive improvement, ). A lot of components of the Windows Phone OS are based on CE 7, but not entirely. There isn't much of a dev community surrounding windows CE itself, so you will probably wont find it too exciting. The OS however is more than capable of powering an in-car navigation system, provided the software layer on top is to your standards.

Hope I've helped in some way

Ok thanks guys. Now on to my next question. Have any of you ever loaded new/updated maps into your car's navigation unit? I think that you have to put it on a micro SD car, but I'm not sure about the process. Is it a pain? Are the maps expensive?
