As others have said, an Intel build would be much better. The i5 is brilliant and quite cheap, perfect for a $1100 build. Saying no to Intel because of fanboyism is just pure stupid. Or you could just wait for bulldozer, I am quite hyped to see some benchmarks
post #43 of 57
Yes. Please just wait it out for Bulldozer.

I like Wildcard36qs build. And that 1090T will hold over for a few months, until bulldozer can be tested and get the kinks worked out.

Normally I'd agree, but he's kind of right. $1100 can buy a sandy bridge plat form that would be more future proof.

Op: I know you said he'd like to stick with and and is unconcerned with bulldozer, but his money would be better spent on those two. If he needs the rig now I would go 2500k, if he can wait I would go bd. If he still wants amd right now there are plenty of good suggestions already posted here by other members.

Please don't think I'm trying to be rude. Just when I see someone about to spend that kind of money I try to make them see all options. Sandy bridge and bulldozer both would be more future proof than anything amd has to offer right now.

I would drop the corsair h60. Those all in one cpu-watercoolers are just a gimmick. Also, I would agree with the 2500k build suggestion. You could spend around $800 on an i5-2500k build, thus saving money and gaining performance. This Phenom II build Is really overpriced from the get-go. I wouldn't recommend the Phenom II build unless you were trying to go sub ~$600

Right now, the most optimal builds would either revolve around an Am3+ motherboard, buying a "placeholder" cpu, and upgrading to bulldozer when it comes out, or, buying a 2500k build. However, The reason the Am3+ path doesn't make any sense is because Intel is also coming out with their own CPU, IVY bridge. This means You can buy the 2500k now as your place holder! Giving you more performance now and later with the Intel upgrade path.

Back to topic though.I will offer my suggestions in this 1 build equal to the original $1100 starting price. Take what you want from my suggestions, but know that this build is better than a Phenom II Build.

I also believe it is good practice to leave expandability in any PC. So I will not recommend crossfiring right off the bat, but rather buy a more expensive single card solution now and crossfire later on.

-First Build: $1100 Limit
*i5-2500k -$219
Reasons:
-Since its the best bang for the buck. Almost guaranteed 4.5ghz overclock.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819115072

*MSI Motherboard z68-gd65 g3 -$199
Reasons:
-This board is great because it has dual pcie 3.0 x16 slots. Which will be optimal for crossfire.
-Will be able to overclock the 2500k to its limit.
- Supports either sli/crossfire, thus giving more freedom to change.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813130611

*Corsair 750 PSU -$110
Reasons:
-For Crossfire , overclocking headroom, and impeccable build quality.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...scrollFullInfo

*GTX 570 ~$300
Reasons:
Better than 6950 and 6970 at single screen resolutions

*GSKill Ripjaw 1600 CL 6 -$60
Reasons:
-Mind blowing performance worthy of a $1100 build
-Intel i5's and i7's don't benefit much past 1866mhz ram speed
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820231444

*Wd Caviar Black 1tb -$80
Reason:
-1tb of space should last long enough until you can afford an ssd.
- 7200rpm 64mb cache
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822136533

*Coolermaster V8 -$48
Reasons:
-ITs cheaper than usual, actually cheaper than the v6, which makes no sense, and will overclock your cpu to 4.5ghz no problem

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16835103055

Thus leaving us with around $100 Left over to buy a cd-rom drive, and a case. Also, keep in mind that all of my prices come from newegg and will vary with time. As well, Better deals on these products can probably be found at other retailers.
, oh and
This build KICKS THE LIVING ***** OUT OF THE ORIGINAL PHENOM II BUILD

I just have to ask. Whats the point in dropping that kind of money on a socket that's EOL in 6 months? AM3+ will support Bulldozer in October but Amd is moving Bulldozer Enhanced to FM2 in Q2 of next year.

Amd diehards or not you're just throwing away money

Thread Starter
Well, as ive stated before, i am well versed in both sandy bridge's leaps and bounds as well as the fact that bulldozer should be waited for for most people wanting to upgrade an AMD platform.
It was a colaboration of my insisting and his ignorance that led to that spec list. Im happy (and a little proud...?) to say that after arguing enoguh and showing him this thread, he is now awaiting bulldozer and will be ordering a sabertooth mobo am3+ board and kingston hyper x 1600mhz ram this week!
You guys are a great help, and i thank you all for that. Except those of you who offered no advice and opted to be aarogant and snide. Those guys are extemely hopeless. But to the rest of you heres a thumbs up.
