hyperthreading vs nonhyperthreading

Thread Starter
most people that i've been talking that are computer enthusiast has been telling me that if i want the best gaming computer for ANY kind of game out there, that the best chipset that i should go for is the s1155 with a i5-2500K (nonhyperthreading) vs. the i7-2600k (hyperthreading). I thought that the i7-2600k would be able to do what the i5-2500k can do in terms of gaming and on top of that is able to hyperthreading for more multitasking. Well, I've already started buying my computer parts for my new rig...just got the ASUS maximus IV extreme. Now that I have a mobo, just wanna know now what kind of processor I should really get.

I think it's really the fact that the price point for the performance on the i5 2500k is so ridiculous that going with the i7 2600k just isn't feasible. The i5 2500k can generally be overclocked extremely well and is generally 100$ less. Anything you'd be doing probably wouldn't really stress the i5 enough that you'd notice the difference with an i7 unless you were just looking for high benchmark scores and stress testing.

for gaming right now, the 2500k is the best bet, no need for hyperthreading.

HyperThreading is very minimal... shoving more and more junk through the same pipelines... usually less than a 10% difference in rendering, and 1 fps in games.

If a third of a second in 3dsmax or 1 extra frame per second in Crysis is worth $100 to you, go for the 2600k.

If you're just gaming then hyperthreading is useless as a solar-powered flashlight.

But if you need the extra power for multi-threaded apps, then yes

Most programs don't use it at all. I have it disabled on my 2600k chip. It saves me a little on my temps with my overclock.

I posted a couple of benchmarks on this topic a few weeks back:

http://www.overclock.net/intel-cpus/...enchmarks.html

I can't comment on gaming, but you'll see that for certain apps, encoding can range from 15-30% faster with HT on.

Actually, you'll get 1fps less in games, not more. It's been proven that hyperthreading being on is bad for games that use 4 or less cores, and that is more or less all games.

Games that use 4 cores or more benefit from Hyperthreading. For example Civilization 5 ore Shogun 2, generally all RTS games except Starcraft 2. In GTA 4 HT CPUs perform way better than normal ones.

If you buy a CPU however, you buy it for at least 3 years and in the future more and more games will make use of it. So it's basically a question of saving a few bucks now and vs buying a more expensive CPU later.
