GTX 470 Temps

Thread Starter
Hey guys,

I just received my GTX 470 (open box) in the mail yesterday and I finally got around to installing it, I noticed that the idle temps are scary high (85C.) Ambient temp is around 90F.

Card I purchased:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814125338

One thing I've noticed, is that no matter what I set my fan to in MSi Afterburner, it decreases in temp very rapidly and goes back up to 85C as if the fan is doing nothing. This literally happens at 25% fan and 100% fan. I'm assuming I'm going to have to RMA it but perhaps there is something I'm missing here?

I say RMA.

Wow that's hot especially for that card.. My EVGA 465 unlocked into a 470 runs 72-74C and thats on max load lol.. Try changing the thermal paste and if that doesn't work RMA it.

Yeah, RMA if you can. If you can't, the cooler may not being making good contact, pick up some TIM, and try to reseat it.

Yeah ... RMA or try to take a look at the cooling mounting. It have only 4 screws to the back of the PCB, try to see if its making proper contact with the GPU.

Maybe it needs new thermal pads. Reseat if you don't want to wait for RMA. I love EVGA, but thermal pads and tim from factory suck.

I've never reseated a GPU before, I have done it to a CPU many times though. I'm assuming there isn't really a way to screw it up and that this won't void my warranty if they realize I've manually reseated and applied my own TIM.
You won't void it, just don't ruin any stickers or break any tabs.

If you can go without, it's best to just rma it. Let them send you a working model, as that was what they were suppose to do in the first place.
