[Build Log] Storm Scouter i5-2500k

Thread Starter
Hey all, finally getting around to posting this build log on my new build (which you can see in my sig). This is my first build is about 4 years, so it took about 6 hours as I was doing my best to keep it clean.

Booting up for the first time, nearly all went well . Upgraded from a Q6600 @2.4ghz, 8800gts (320mb ram) to this new build is crazy. No more lag, way better temps, etc.

The i5 was giving me some trouble overclocking, namely I was increasing the multiplier but nothing was happening. Then just now it finally decided to work! It wouldn't boot up at 4.5, but it might be a voltage problem. At the moment I'm running at 4.0ghz.

Temps are phenominal in my new build. I'm used to 80c gpu and what not, so the temps I'm getting now are crazy. At 4.0ghz, cpu is idling at ~34c and prime95 loading at about 53c~. My Core 1 temp is about 3-4c higher than the others, which is bothersome. I put on my H60 perfectly so IDK what is up with that.

GPU temps are also crazy good. 45c~ idle, 65c~ in BC2, and 75c in furmark. This is amazingly good imo. I'm having to get used to being able to play BC2 so smoothly .

And this sound card is awesome! First sound card ever and the power it has added to my 4.1 setup and DJ monitors is unreal. So clear with so much bass, I'm in love :d.

Have had a couple issues with this build:

1. The H60 infamous grinding noise issue. Figured out this is air trapped so I flicked my pump unit and it went away for a couple days. Came back today to my anger but then just now it decided to go away. I have it setup in push pull atm and getting great temps. EDIT: Now it came back >.<

2. The Scout's stock case fan LEDs aren't working (neither is the LED controller). I'm pretty sure I hooked this up right, but maybe not, could use some help here.

3. The two side fans I bought are running at 100%. I had them first hooked up to the PSU which makes sense that they would be at 100%. Switched to mobo 3 pin connectors though and I have no clue how to control their spin rate.

4. My SSD is only getting about 270mb/s read. A lot less than advertised, but I'm not complaining as everything loads so fast . I'm pretty sure its hooked up to sata III...

A little minor quips here and there too, but nothing too major. I plan on doing a couple mods, such as the "false floor" mod and a hard drive cage cover would look sick. Also might get the sentry LX fan controller to control these side fans if I can't figure out how to do it. I'll update this with pictures if I get around to doing this

Anyways, on to the pictures. Sorry about the quality, only have a cell on me at the moment :

hey great build despite the wrong choice of the case can i ask you some thing can you share with me your experience with the XONAR_DG i wanna buy it but i dont know it is good for gaming ??
Nice build. nice and clean.

For your M4 speed that should be faster than that. What chipset have you got this plugged into? Marvell or Intel Z68?

The reason why I ask, I was getting the same problem with my raid set up using different SSD but was still only getting 240MB

It's amazing . On BC2, and setting the headphone amp properly, my headphones are literally pumping every time an explosion goes off. And you can setup the surround to be able to hear accurately where anybody is. Definitely worth it for $30.

What's wrong with the case? . I kind of agree though, wish I had just gone with a full tower.

It's plugged into Z68. I have no clue why the speed is as low as it is.I'm not setup in raid, unless it decided to randomly do some SSD caching or something.

the problem with the case it is small for such a build like your's you have a good looking parts if you have got a case with much room inside you will have a beautiful clean build and it will also improve your cooling and thx for the feedback i will get the card

Here is something you can try innless you have already done it.

Start up your BIOS and under integrated principal: look for >
PCH SATA Control Mode

If it is set to IDE change this to AHCI and see if that helps if not you can just turn it back.

Yeah, this drove me nuts until I found some solutions on the forums. Read down about 3/4 of the way and there are two pics to show you what needs to be connected, should get you up and running !!

No problem . It's a cheap card but you get a lot of value out of it. I was really impressed by it at least. The software isn't "bloatware" either. Make sure you get drivers direct from the ASUS website and don't use the included CD.

Tried it, but then my windows kept blue screening during load up so I figured it was best not to mess with it. While it's not super important, it just bums me my new $220 ssd isn't getting max speeds

Thanks for the tip. I remember googling this before, but I lack the motivation to try to get them on at the moment. I have a mess of wires at the moment on the back side panel and can barely get the side on. I'll go get some more zip ties one of these days and redo it properly and hopefully figure this out.

I noticed one of the scout's molex connectors only had two prongs in it, so maybe I plugged that in wrong, idk.

H60 is still grinding >.<. And still trying to figure out how to manually control fan speeds. My side window fans are connected to PWR_FAN and SYS_FAN 2. The SYS_FAN 2 controls the speed to 1300rpm automatically while the PWR_FAN runs it at loud ass 2000rpm (100%).

Hi i found this website that talks about your SSD when installing windows.

What to do with my new Crucial m4 128GB? Three questions

1. There's no danger in activating ahci BEFORE installing Windows 7? Reason I ask is because I think I've read somewhere that you need to install ahci drivers in OS before you swtich in bios...

2. After I turn on hot plugging on the INTEL sata 6Gb/s port (guess I do that somewhere in bios) , do you mean I should disconnect the SSD from the Sata 3 Gb/s (safe to do that??) and plug into the INTEL 6Gb/s port instead? And THEN disable LMP on the INTEL 6 Gb/s port? And then install Windows 7?

3. Where in bios do I disable LMP?

1) Far from any danger, being in AHCI before install is best practise. If you're in IDE during install and later want to switch to AHCI then you need to make a registry change to cause Windows to load AHCI drivers (they don't need installed, just told to load)

2) After flashing the bios on the sata 2 controller in IDE, you do want to set back to AHCI and move the drive to sata 3 before install. You don't want (and certainly don't need!) to swap the drive with the power on if that's what you're asking? I think the statement about turning that option on and the need to swap your drive at this moment in time are unrelated.

3) No idea, will have to leave that to m0fus when he's next on.
So it looks like you need to set the PCH SATA Control Mode to AHCI before you install windows.

So it looks like you need to set the PCH SATA Control Mode to AHCI before you install windows.
Thanks, I changed the registry value for start from 3 -> 0 in order to force AHCI drivers and I was able to change the controllers in the bios to AHCI without any bsods. Now I'm running at 340mb/s~ instead of 270mb/s~, so still missing about 100mb/s of the advertised speed. Not sure if there's any other tweaks I need to do. I enabled TRIM but that doesn't affect speed. I could try that "hot swapping" technique...

One less problem to worry about...getting close to RMAing the H60!
