SSD RAID setup with new motherboard?

Thread Starter
I'm upgrading my system to sandy bridge and am picking out the motherboard as of now, I wanted to pick out a motherboard with a decent raid chipset for 2 - 4 SSD's in raid 0 for my main system files and some of my games.

I'm still pouring a lot of time into researching which one I should go with so I could use some help.

What motherboard should I pick?

(obviously picking i7 2600k, unless E series comes out soon, and plan on using crucial M4 ssds)

Not sure if this should be in SSD or motherboard topic, move if necessary please.

If your going to go with four ssds, you may be better off trying a pcie ssd live the revo. Similar prive and faster speeds. It does need a supporting mb to boot from though. Revo drives use raid to achieve speeds over 1000mb a second. There have been some interesting ssd arcticles on tomshardware recently.

I haven't heard very good things about ocz on overclock.net though

I'm using an OCZ SATA SSD and I absolutely love it. I haven't had any problems with it, knock on wood. lol But I've only heard great things about the Revo drives.

One thing thats very true, if a company has 10 very vocal angry customers, there is 1000 satisfied customers. Revo drives have compantibility problems with certain motherboard, so as long as you do the research on the MB first to make sure they will work together, you'll be fine .

There are more problems with RevoDrives that just that....

Why not use the money on fewer larger SSDs? Besides, your onboard controller would bottleneck after 2-3 current generation SSDs.
Once again...

I didn't know that, what other issues?

You mean just 2 large ssds? That's entirely a better idea . 2x 256gb and it's prolly be speeds around 700-800mbs in raid 0?

Bentemo, why do you want to raid 0 a few ssds? Do you have a need for it or just a want?

Just for the speed.

I was asking because I know about the raid 0 chipset 600meg bottleneck, I was wondering if I went with an external raid controller if that would be better.

I was thinking of just getting a couple of 120gb SSDs,

I've heard good things about the crucial m4 4kb access speeds for every day speed performance.

I might not even bother with raid if I can't use trim.

This is true as far as I know.

Get one large ssd, it will be more than fast enough that you wouldn't be able to perceive a raid 0 config benefits. The benefits of the raid 0 ssd are primarily in databases with a lot of small reads/writes that would most likely not fit your situation.

I researched into this a few months back because of the speed you get with raid 0, and after speaking to a few friends they convinced me that it wasn't worth the effort/headache for speed I won't see

Yea I think I'll just get a big nice SSD.

I've heard that new intel raid controller chipsets have trim for raid 0 but most motherboards are marvel anyway so yea.

An SSD is going to be leagues above my single WD Black hdd anyway.
