Build for brother turned bad... Something burned. - Page 2

I seriously doubt that a cable rubbing against a fan would cause smoke, and by the way the board is running I would imagine that something has gone on the motherboard.
If you could post some pictures of any suspect areas I can advise you further. I wouldn't run prime until you know exactly whats gone, stressing the system could make things much worse as we dont know how stable the board is.,
I dont want you to think im being a hard ass about this, I have been in this situation before and I carried on using the board when i knew it was damaged....eventually it blew completely and took both gfx cards and the psu with it. I just dont want to see you trash the system if it can be avoided.

I uploaded some pics. I can't really see anything burned

edit: I just checked second PCi-E slot with the 5770 and it worked... I put back the 2 460s and now they are working. I'm so confused as to what burned.... I'm going to install Windows 7 now and see how it runs.

Any more ideas as to what could have happened? The PSU is brand new could it have burned something inside it?

This is very weird!!
Can't see the link for the pics though bud

If your psu had fried, it wouldn't work full stop, their touchy little sods so dont worry about that at the moment.
I could be wrong, but you maybe the luckiest b****** alive.
Best thing to do is install windows and see how it goes, monitor the system very closely for the first few hours or so. Any problems, kill the power immediately.

The smoke is the thing that's worrying me, smoke is a bad thing for a rig to chuck out in general.
If you can sort the link out for the pics i'll take a look, in the mean time just run the rig normally and just keep a very close eye on it.

I installed win 7, installed rivers, put all his data back, ran updates, and a bunch of stuff and nothing seems wrong with the computer anything. It was on for at least 4 hours.

Images were uploaded with imageshack I don't know why you can't see them.

Did you make sure the motherboard standoff's were not causing a short?

Maybe.

How would I check on that or what should I be looking for? I did miss to put one screw in the stand offs...

edit: I guess it would be a good idea to take out the motherboard and check the back for any burnt sides? Also what would cause the stands to short like what exactly could I have done wrong?

I've had a piece of lint that got caught between the CPU and the heatsink when I wasn't looking. It produced a little sizzle and smelled a bit, but nothing shorted out or shut down. The system booted fine after the piece of lint burnt to crisp.

It could be possible that one of the standoffs did not line up properly. Hopefully this is not the case.

But yea I would take out the mobo and check the back for any damage or burnt spots. Especially around the standoff places.
