Cannot Detect Hard Drive - First Build

Thread Starter
Hi everyone - I'm almost done with my first build. I have the Asus p8p67 pro and for HDD the Samsung 1Tb F3 Spinpoint. On my initial boot the system recognizes the three drives: Asus DVD, HDD and SSD. Then comes the message about not detecting a hard drive. I pressed F1 and in the EFI on the lower left hand corner there are only 2 icons: DVD and SSD but no HDD. I'm using the SATA 3 Gb plug to the motherboard and powering the HDD with 4-pin peripheral connector from my Corsair HX850 PSU. Advice?

check all of your connections. maybe try using another sata port on the board

Is your DVD drive in either sata 0 or 1? if so change it out for your hdd.

DVD is in SATA3 Gb, SSD is in SATA6 Gb, HDD is also SATA 3 Gb. The power connects SSD and HDD, so it's getting juice. I haven't done anything in BIOS yet and I haven't even attempted to install Windows 7.

you cant have two items connected to the same SATA port, so please get the right layout for us.

I do not contend that the SATA power connector is not getting juice, I was implying that the HDD may not have a solid connection to the power cable. At any rate, even if it is right, I would check it and my SATA cables just in case

Sorry. Not the same SATA 3 Gb port, but I plugged each into a unique SATA 3 Gb plug on the asus p8p67 pro motherboard. The actual motherboard ports I use is SATA3G_6 for the HDD and SATA3G_4 for the DVD.

This is very odd...
What happens when you unplug both the SSD and DVD drive and try to boot then?

I haven't tried that one yet DK. I switched SATA plugs, yet still on boot I get Cannot detect hard drive message. However, on the screen, I get:

Detected ATA/ATAPI Devices:
SATA Port 2: SSD
SATA Port 3: HDD
SATA Port 4: Asus DVD

I go into Bios, and I don't see the icon for the HDD in the lower left hand corner.

I go into Advanced\\SATA configuration, and the system shows

SATA Port 2: SSD
SATA Port 3: HDD
SATA Port 4: Asus DVD

Hot plug is disabled in this section as well, but the Advanced\\Sata Configuration correctly shows the proper devices in the proper ports.

Now I'm lost. I just don't get why the system won't detect the Samsung HDD and why the icon for this drive is actually missing in the EFI display. The DVD and SSD are there, just not the HDD.

My ASUS mobo says the same thing about my HDD but it recognizes it still and runs fine, you may try updating your bios?

Call to Asus after everything produced no results show I have a bad motherboard, so Asus is replacing it. Asus and Newegg are fast and great. Highly recommend. Newegg is also replacing the Samsung HDD just in case there's an issue with it. They don't want to go through this anymore than I do. Thanks for all you input!

@DK. I did your test. After Initializing...

I get the usual Cannot detect hard drive

After this, the Detected ATA/ATAPI shows the HDD.

This time though in EFI the HDD is displayed in the lower left hand corner. Since the SSD and DVD aren't plugged into the motherboard, they aren't displayed.

@Robitussin: Can you see your HDD in the EFI bios in the lower left hand corner? While my system detects the HDD in the proper port, the HDD icon isn't in the EFI for Boot Order. That only shows my DVD and SSD. Does a BIOS update fix this?

Again, now I'm really baffled.
