Going from e8600@4ghz to i3 2100 worth it ?

Thread Starter
My friend has e8600 oc'd to 4 ghz and he is thinking about upgrading to i3 2100.
He doesn't have the money for i5 2500k.
So he has been bothering me asking if we can switch gpu so he can test the games on my system to see if there is any advantage ( I have i3 )
I am telling him it's probably waste of money, and he should save up for i5,because altrough sandy bridge has big advantage over c2d,whole 1 ghz difference in clock speed is sure to make up for big part of that advantage, even neutralize it completely ?
What do you guys think ?

get the i5 2500k.

to ignore the value would be insanity, lagging behind constantly requires more upgrades in the near future.

the 2500k is the beginning of a generation. perfect time to get IN on the new tech, not when it is dying!

The i3 will be faster mainly because of Hyper-Threading. The single threaded performance should be almost the same (SB is about 30% faster than C2).

More games are taking advantage of 3 or more cores thought the vast majority are still optimized for dual cores or consoles.

So you think it's not worth the upgrade ?
I told him to get the i5 2500k but he doesn't have the money atm

A Ci3 2100 would destroy E8600 in any game that really uses 4 threads like GTA IV, Battlefield BC2,even Crysis 2 which seems to be using 4 threads..

For games that use up to 2 threads there would not be much of a difference (except for Crysis which is really poor coded)..

A 2100 is on pair with stock AMD PII X4 955 in almost everything and also faster than AMD in games..

CHEERS..

As mentioned in the previous post, results may vary depending on the game. For the most part, it's a significant but not a huge upgrade.

He should really save for the i5-2500K which has the best price/performance ratio ever (no exaggeration).

i7 2600k is not that much more expensive, and good if you use apps that support multithreading.

It's for old i3 540 I am talking about new i3 2100
It's really hard to find reviews comparing e8600 and new i3 2100 I guess because e8600 is so old now smile.gif
