Going from e8600@4ghz to i3 2100 worth it ? - Page 3

Yes, but don't you think a 4GHz core 2 duo is enough for a 560, or 570?

I would definitely just wait a little while, and save up for the i5 2500k. Much better use of the money if he's gonna spend it.

I'm not sure, but If I had to guess I'd go with an i3-2100 at stock over a 4GHz c2d. Architecture makes a massive difference.

How can you give this advice without knowing what GPU he has\\wants to get?
He'll get the best value with a balanced system. a i5-2400 + 560 will give better value than a i5-2500k + 460, for instance. Especially considering that boards that allow overclocking cost more.

Architecture alone matters, but the clock speed advantage of the Core 2 does a little to negate this. What he gains most is Hyper-threading, and that's hardly worth a full platform change.

There's a difference between going with one over another coming from a much lower starting point versus moving from one to the other. They're two different things, and it makes all the difference. The other is better, yes... but the change out isn't worth it. That's why people are suggesting the Core i5 2500K, whether his GPU needs it or not. It's a much more worthwhile move and will give him more performance, both now and in for the duration.

Well he has 285 gtx and he isn't selling it,he says that he doesn't need dx11.
But he thinks he is still beeing bottlenecked by his cpu in battlefield 2 and witcher 2
Getting i5 sandy bridge or not making the upgrade seems to be best choice
Thanks for your help guys

A buddy of mine went from a GTX295, to 2-GTX460 in SLI, and he said all the online games he plays run much smoother and faster for him.

Probably, he would benefit most, by going with a GTX560

I'm not sure about The Witcher 2, but in Battlefield Bad Company 2, he is. That game wants a quad core CPU. I still say moving to a Core i3 2100 from it is not worth it. Save up get a more proper justification like the Core i5 2500K (or even a Core i5 2400, but I'd highly recommend the Core i5 2500K) and sit with what he has now until then.

This! Tell him to stop *****footing around and push that chip further. The phenom ii x4 920 I grabbed for ~85$ does better than 4ghz
