Llano Laptop

Thread Starter
Alright OCN.
I need a new laptop. I will be playing games on it, but nothing too intensive.
Mostly The Sims 3, Minecraft and some Mass Effect and Dragon age now and then. Its mostly going to be a media machine.

Im thinking a good Llano laptop is my best bet for price and performance.
Unfortunately the only one I was aware of(HP dv6z Quad edition) is no longer available so I need some other options, and the less expensive the better.

EDIT:I can probably swing up to $800, but I would like to keep it under $700 if possible.

How much was it?
Like I said, Im not going to be gaming too much or too heavily so an i7 and a 525M is overkill and probably far out of budget.

I can go up to a max of $800.
I don't really care if its Intel or AMD, I just want to be able to play medium level games at playable settings. Ive got a few Ideas of my own.

This laptop for the money is nice. you get an i7 and a decent graphics card for alittle bit of gaming; but I think over its a really nice laptop for the money. not sure how long that price will last.

I was going to suggest that HP you were looking at OP.

Why not the Asus K53TA for $450 at Best Buy? It has some issues with terrible screen banding that are now mostly resolved by a BIOS update. You can find huge discussion threads regarding these issues if you search on Google or your favorite search engine. (Of course, buying this laptop also means you have to go to Wor... Best Buy )

Still, for $450 you get a laptop that should do your moderate gaming just fine. Llanos are also overclockable with K10stat, and many people are at 2.2 to 2.3 GHz, including me (up from 1.4 GHz). This is the non-TurboCore clock speed. I currently have my TurboCore at 2.6 GHz, and I see some people have it at 3 GHz. Aside from the A6's integrated graphics, there's a Radeon 6650m.

A pro and/or con is that the laptop comes with 1 stick of 4 GB RAM. Therefore the laptop isn't running in dual channel, but you only need to buy one 4 GB stick instead of buying a 2x 4 GB kit. Most people seem to have a Samsung 1333 MHz stick shipping by default, in case you're interested in matching the brand. Otherwise you can just spend ~$40 for a set of 2x 4 GB.

I've been satisfied with the laptop so far, considering it's $450.

Edit: Guess I should put the specs for your convenience.

AMD A6-3400m (default 1.4 GHz, not sure what turbo is, but I find AMD's turbo to be less aggressive than Intel's. Not too much of a con since you can overclock.)
Radeon 6650m (1 GB DDR3. AMD still hasn't resolved their OpenGL issue where all OpenGL apps run on integrated. Maybe Asus will provide a BIOS fix someday so you can disable switchable graphics and just force dedicated 100% of the time. If your D3D game runs slowly, make sure it's set to High Performance mode in the Switchable Graphics section of Catalyst Control Center.)
4 GB DDR3 RAM (1 stick Sammy @ 1333 MHz)
500 GB HD (5400 RPM unfortunately, but standard at this price)
1366x768 (viewing angles could be better)
standard size keyboard with smaller size numpad, non-chiclet
your typical wifi n (atheros), gigabit ethernet (realtek), one USB 3 and two USB 2 ports, webcam (pretty bad quality though) and microphone
hdmi and vga out
one headphone and one microphone jack
SD card reader
LOTS OF CRAPWARE.

I would recommend this computer. Just wanted to throw out all the info I had so you could make an informed decision. Maybe take a look at the machine in person so you can see what it's like. Note that before the BIOS update you will see massive banding on the monitor and perhaps even random horizontal lines. These are fixed with the 206 BIOS (stock is version 203)
