Help to get connected (the best way)

Thread Starter
So I want to connect my electronics through my receiver and need a little help.

I have a Pioneer Elite VSX03THX receiver and I want to be able to connect my desktop to it. So far I have only the video cards HDMI to send the audio as the DP will be going to my U3011 monitor (when I get it.) I also have a laptop I'd like to be able to be connected to the u3011 HDMI and still have audio sent to the receiver at the same time, problem is laptop only has 1 HDMI.

I want the best possible configuration so that the B&W 685's I have will sound there best as most the items I play will be off the two computers. Whether it be music, movies, tv or games I want it all through the receiver.
I looked at sound cards (PCI express x1) as I have a 4 way sli from evga and only have the x16 slots which x1 will go into. The only problem with this is I have zero experience with sound cards so I'm not sure that's the best route.

So there you have it, that's my dilemma and I'm hoping that some knowledgeable members here could lend some sound advice to me

Is the use of DisplayPort absolutely necessary? (I assume DP = DisplayPort)

If it isn't you can connect both the desktop and laptop to the Receiver by HDMI and then use the HDMI output to the U3011 and use the AVR as a switch between the two.

The HDMI connection from the laptop and desktop is digital, that means that all of the sound processing such as digital to analog conversion is done by the Receiver which negates the need for a soundcard.

I thought about just HDMI for video but isn't that limited to 1920 x 1080 and I want 2560 x 1600, what the screen can do. Though I may may be mistaken about teh resolution for HDMI or misinformed.

Ideally HDMI for everything would be ideal if it supports the resolution

The max resolution depends on what version of HDMI you have. HDMI 1.1-2 support a max of 1920x1080, but 1.3 can do 2560x1600, and 1.4 can do 3840x2160. You can probably find this somewhere in your receiver manual. So if you have HDMI 1.3 or better, definitely run the HDMI through your receiver.
