SSD vs. 3x Raid0

I just got my raid0 up and running so I decided to get some benchmarks. I'm posting this for informative purposes as well as to see if my drives are operating in the norm.

OCZ Vertex 3 - firmware v2.11(not max iops):



3x Samsung Spinpoint F3s in a raid0 (the outer 150GB of 3TB):


I was very impressed with the sequential, but I was hoping for better 4k on the raid0 (hoping, but not expecting).

Do these look good?

Hmm, it's been a while since i looked at hard disk performance figures, but i see that OCZ Vertex 3 own quotes on this drive are supposed to be:

VTX3-25SAT3-60G - 60GB OCZ Technology Vertex 3, 2.5" SATA 6Gb/s SSD, MLC-Flash, Read 535MB/s, Write 480MB/s, 60K IOPS

Interesting those numbers are far off yours.

That's because OCZ provides the number for highly compressible data and that's extremly rare. That is also why the numbers on the Crucial M4 are far behind while performance is similar in a real world scenario.

These numbers are very impressive but the SSD will still have faster access times than the HDDs You get a lot more capacity though

I can live with it. The SSD is only for my OS. The HDDs are for games on the outer 150GB of the platters (might increase later) and the rest of the space is for random data, programs, videos, etc..

I remember hearing something about compressible data now that you mentioned it. So my numbers are making more sense to me now. I knew they were lower than advertised.

I wasn't expecting the HDDs to beat the SSD in 4k. But it would have been sweet if they were much closer.

5MB 4k speeds is sweet for a HDD RAID-0 array.

But I suspect some of that speed is from them caching the data - the 100MB test is pretty easy for drives to cache. Try the 1000MB test on the HDDs and watch the scores drop a bit.

Proof that HDDs perform really well when dealing with a single tiny file. (which they can cache)




That's from a single WD20EARS. (by no means a "fast" drive)

That's a good point. I hadn't considered the cache when I did the benchmarks. So here are the same two tests you ran:






It does drop off a lot at 1000MB. But in all fairness, it's not very likely in real world situations for anyone to be dealing with over 100MB of 4k sized files at once (at least in my experience and what I use my computer for). That's 25,000 files assuming they are all exactly 4k.

As the files grow in size the speed at which they can be read/written to also increases.

A HDD raid0 will probably never match a modern SSD in terms of 4k though.


Edit: I also did the SSD at 50MB and was surprised to see the Raid0 beat it there, haha!

Well, CrystalDiskMark tests a contiguous 50/100/1000MB file - but it does have some relevance to certain real world usage. For example, web browser cache. Although it's likely to be ~64K reads, web browser cache can actually end up splattered across hundreds of gigabytes, due to NTFS trying to fill all the gaps. A RAID array isn't going to help a huge amount with that - but a defragmenter or separate partition might.

(I'm a pretty big advocate of partitioning a drive into smaller chunks, so similar data stays close together)

That's good to know. It makes me more confident in my decision to use a RAMDisk for the internet cache.




I may have some other uses for it later, but for now it's just a browser cache.

Originally I was using it for temp files too, but I didn't like having to use the imaging function of it since it increased the boot/shutdown times. I was also unsure how certain installations would react since I know a lot of them use the temp file and then they might need to reference the temp file data after requiring a reboot and it might be before the image gets loaded into the RAM.

Those 4k results are extremely good from a hard disk array.

Is that on the Intel PCH?

Edit: nm, I see a 50MB test size, that explains it.
