I understand the comments about not wanting this to happen for a variety of reasons.When taking the Poll, remember that it is not asking if you want this to happen, only if you think it will.
I think that it will happen. Right now it is technically possible to include all of the components of a PC on one chip. From what I have been able to glean reading up on this subject on the net, the primary obstacle to making this practical is chip yield of usable chips per wafer. As the physical complexity of each chip increases, the percentage of chips that have flaws increases. So you not only lose more chips during manufacturing, but each one that is lost represents a bigger piece of each wafer compared to making the components individually. That being said, one must keep in mind that this very same dilemna has been, and continues to be, overcome gradually as the complexity of IC's increases. Having just one chip would make the manufacture of a PC much less expensive, so at some point this yield problem will be outweighed by the cost saving factor of having to only install a single IC on a motherboard.

The concept of making a "generic" IC that could be programmed to perform different processes, like a GPU for instance, is not as far fetched as some posters have indicated. This sort of thing is already being done in less complex devices.

What are your thoughts on this? Is the manufacturing yield hurdle just too high? What other factors/obstacles do you see involved in making a fully integrated PC?


When will a wafer like this consist of many fully integrated PC IC's?

The way I see it is that most of the stuff will make it to the single chip in the next 20 or so years. However some parts like sound processing can't be shrunk down unless analog output is abandoned which I find unlikely. Memory is another issue as doing away with the current modular design would mean a very wide array of different designs would need to be made for different people's needs. Perhaps the future computers will be on a single chip but can still be expanded beyond the core chip with more memory and other features. Another possibility that I think can happen is that there will be motherboards that can accommodate more the one "core chip" so expanding would be made by adding chips making it a mini cloud computer.
