Best $80 AM3 Mobo?

Thread Starter
Hey guys,

I'd like to know, what is absolutely the best AM3 board for around $80 USD? I'd like 2 PCIe slots for crossfire that will run at x8/x8 and 4 memory slots, but if I have to sacrifice those to get an other wise nice quality board for that price, I shall. Absolute maximum budget... $105. My Dad said he will help pay for it and I will be able to cover around $80 after my b-day, so I reallyyy don't wanna push to far into my dad's wallet, but if I absolutely have to go to something like $110 to get an epic quality board, then so be it. If there isn't a board that's SERIOUSLY worth paying that $110 for (And if it's that high it's at least gotta be an AM3+ board, or again, a seriously epic AM3 board), then let's try to keep it around $80-$90.

M5A97 is now $100 on Newegg. I think you can still get it for $90 elsewhere. Great board these things have a lot of features, I am happy with my EVO.

If you are trying to go for an absolute dirt cheap gaming rig, I would suggest the Biostar A870U3 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131767

I loved my Biostar A870. It was a real winner as far as a fast smooth gamer and kicked butt for $60. Limited in the # of USB's and other things though. I would go with a M5A97 if you can possibly swing it. A 900 series board will have the new UEFI mouse controlled BIOS along with an auto-overclock feature that actually works. You will also be ready for the next generation AMD chips coming along, so in a year or two you could pop in one of those if you want.

I've heard bad things about Biostar but I am trying to keep this as dirt cheap as possible... I've already made a horribly foolish mistake and bought deals when I saw them, so I've been getting the hardware over a period of months and... Yeah that is a horrible mistake I will never make again. I think I can swing $100 for the M5A97... Where can I find it for $90? And what's the difference between the M5A97 and the Evo version?

My one experience with Biostar was good.

The EVO version of this board has a beefier VRM setup (onboard power supply for CPU) that can handle more power. I am pretty sure the features are the same. I saw a post here quoting Amazon or somewhere that had that board for less, I guess you can do a search. If you have to pay $100, it is still a great board. Loaded with all kinds of neat features.

The A870U3 will not do CrossfireX at the 8x-8x you wish.
Your closest choices would be the ASRock 970 Extreme4 (AM3+ 8x-8x, based on 990X chipset) but this is $105 + shipping. The M4A79XTD EVO (8x-8x, 790X) used to go for low prices, but I don't think this is the case anymore.

EDIT: Open box M4A79XTD EVO is in stock for $79 shipped

Thanks for the info on Evo vs. Regular and mobo suggestion, +1

No way on Earth am I going with an open box mobo deal again... Just got done spending 4 or 5 hours determining this one as faulty and I am left with distrust in my RAM and CPU now because of it... I appreciate the suggestions though, and would rep you if I could. I'm sure you've heard that quite a few times tongue.gif lol

OOPS:o I guess I could fix it, but the Biostar I meant to link isn't what the OP is interested in so the two links to the M5A97 are ok.

The good news is that Newegg must have been monitoring this thread and decided to drop the M5A97 back down to $90!

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131767

And they knocked off the $6 shipping charge as well.

That's very understandable, from any one's point of view, including and especially as a mod smile.gif But yes, I got an open box M4A79 XTD Evo for $43 and spent hours with help from others here at OCN determining that it was faulty, which is why I was lucky and was offered a refund from newegg and I am now deciding to buy a brand new motherboard cool.gif

Yeah that's fantastic! I saw that price drop just a few moments ago and think it's a fantastic deal. It will be a bit before I get the cash for it, I owe my dad the $60 in my bank already for my PSU, but since he said he'd help pay I think he'd loan me the money, again lol.

Also, since I have now messed up building a rig twice, I have created a post in the AMD General section titled "Best Construction Process" and I have gone into some detail about the problems I faced with the most recent defective build. I'd like for my third time to go as smoothly as possible and get my own computer back up and running. At the end of the post I have a list of questions I would love to have answered so I can safely construct my rig with peace of mind that it will work once I get my new motherboard. If you guys wanted to drop by that and take a peak at the questions and offer what input you could, that would be fantastic smile.gif
