Got a PS2 - Page 4

Thread Starter
Well, I'm something of a fledgling game designer. Been working off and on through highschool and through now on small little projects. Never going to release them of course, they're more for my benefit.

In any case, I've been exploring gamings past, seeing what works and such. Why the good games were good, why the bad games were bad. As such, there's only so far I can go with my PC alone. I currently have my PC, my Wii which I use for emulation of older consoles below the original Playstation as well as playing gamecube games, my DS which is used for old handheld emulation and such, my PS3 which covers most modern console games as well as Playstation games, my iPod Touch, and finally my recently obtained PS2. Because the PS3 lacks any backwards compatibility of the PS2 for some unknown reason, I was missing a huge chunk of gaming history.

The PS2 is one of, if not the best selling console in the world, and I want to explore why that is. I grew up with Nintendo consoles, so I never got to experience it in its prime, and it's currently not too late to get into it.

yeah removing the backwards compatibility was sony's biggest mistake, we were lucky though and got one that is

If your looking into good games made by indie developers dwarf fortress is worth a peek

I guess you missed out on the greatest console ever made then. I don't think there is any console that has a better library of games than the PS2.

I see that you didn't get a backwards compatible PS3, which I suppose would be the reason for you buying a PS2, in which case I can't fault you all that much. My PS3 is backwards compatible, and I sometimes make the mistake of thinking everyone has this model...

My list of recommended games for you:

Dark Cloud
GTA III
GTA: Vice City
GTA: San Andreas
SOCOM: U.S. Navy Seals
SOCOM II: U.S. Navy Seals
SOCOM 3: U.S. Navy Seals
Xenosaga Episode 1
Xenosaga Episode 2
Xenosaga Episode 3
Timesplitters 2
Gran Turismo 4
Silent Hill 2
Kingdom Hearts
Kingdom Hearts 2
Zone of the Enders
Mobile Suit Gundam: Journey to Jaburo
Madden NFL 2005 (regarded as the best Madden ever made)
Black
Blood Omen 2
Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver 2
Jak and Daxter: The Precursor Legacy
Jak 2
Jak 3
Ratchet and Clank
Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3
Klonoa 2: Lunatea's Veil
Manhunt
Metal Slug Anthology
Midnight Club: Street Racing
Okami
Onimusha
Onimusha 2
Red Faction
Resident Evil 4
Smuggler's Run
Soul Calibur II
Spiderman
Stuntman
Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon
Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell
Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell: Pandora Tomorrow
Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory
Twisted Metal: Black
Tenchu: Wrath of Heaven

Metal Gear Solid HD Collection (Contains MGS2, MGS3, Peace Walker, for the PS3 in November)
God of War HD Collection (PS3)
Devil May Cry HD Collection (PS3)
Team ICO Collection (PS3)

The last 4 are for the PS3, but they are HD remasters of some GREAT PS2 games. A lot of these I had to go to Wikipedia to remember, which is why it's kind of in alphabetical order. I'm not exaggerating by listing this many games, these really are all must-play games on the PS2.

-Ratchet and Clank series
-Sly Cooper series
-God of War I and II
-Guitar Hero I, II and III (Rocks the 80's was garbage IMO)
-Jak and Daxter series
-Metal Gear Solid series

That's all I can think of right now. Sorry if it wasn't much help, I was more of a Nintendo kid. Oh and I don't know if you live by one, but I picked up 2 PS2 Guitar Hero guitars for $4 at my local Goodwill. They have tons of them, wired and wireless. The wired ones are better though because they don't have that buggy detachable neck.
