GTX 570 Overclocked run as well as a GTX 580

Thread Starter
So, Im updating my graphics card, I want a GTX 580 but its $150 more than a GTX 570, and since theyre pretty close I was wondering if I overclocked my GTX 570 with a program such as MSI Afterburner or RivaTuner, would it run as well as a GTX 580? I know the GTX 570 at stock is very good but I was just curious, because I've seen many tests of the GTX 580 stressed out on say a huge SC2 battle but I haven't seen so much from the GTX 570, so if anyone could answer that for me, btw I use a AMD Phenom ii x4 965 Black Edition, 8GB HyperX 1600, and air cooling on a HAF 922, don't know if it'll help though. thx

You can overclock it to stock 580 speeds, but a 580 would obviously overclock more. I really think the 570 has a better price/performance ratio though.

Yes, at some point you could probably get in the ballpark of a 580, but the clocks are going to be pretty high and the 570 has vrm issues so i wouldnt push my luck overclocking a 570. From what ive read go as high as you can on stock voltage and leave it be to be on the safe side.

EDIT: Overclocking a 570 to 580 speeds does not give you a 580 speed card.

Gtx 570s are awesome cards

Yeah you can overclock them too match a 580 thats not overclocked, fairly easily. But then a 580 overclocked would chew on the 570.

GTX 570 is like, 85% of the performance of a 580, for like 70% the price

Don't get a reference 570, they have vrm problems like GMcDougal said. I would recommend the twin frozr III, I have it currently and it stays cool and has high overclocks. I was actually in the same situation as you, but am very satisfied with my card.

Overclocking is a diminishing returns process.

An overclocked 580 will be faster than an overclocked 570 by much less than stock vs stock. In fact the difference will be so small, you wouldn't even notice it.
So yea, the smart thing to do is to buy a 570 and OC it but you have to make sure it's a non reference card.

Have you looked at the classified? A bit more expensive but will allow you to OC alot higher and not have to worry about the VRM issue

DONT get a reference one.

Unless you want too get added too the list of the blown overclocked gtx 570s.

You want too overclock, get one with a beefed up VRM, I would recommend mine but they are triple slots and take up heaps of room. A lot of people seem too recommend the MSI one...
