LG, Samsung, and Toshiba are the best brands right now, and in that order.

Here is the thing though, it really doesn't matter what brand you choose. These TV's all; have similar problems with very similar fixes at similar prices. What is more important is that you buy a warranty with it.

For example, i bought a 42" panasonic 1080p 120hz for a little under $600 on amazon with a 4 year warranty extension. Those same specs would have cost me $900 coming from LG or samsung, even more for toshiba (toshiba is overpriced, but makes decent TV's). The most common failure i have found with these new TV's is the power supply. that's usually only a $120-150 fix, but if a warranty for the next 3 years only costs $70, it's well worth it if only for the piece of mind.

My last TV was a Toshiba, and it blew up after 2 years of use. That was back when my thinking was "Go with the best and screw a warranty". Now my thinking is "Go with whats good for a decent price, and get a damn warranty".

what are you going to use it for?
How far away do you intend to watch the TV from?
inches requirements?
output requirements?

LG is the best? For real. I have to disagree. I vote panasonic plasma. Plasmas have a better more natural picture then lcd.

You did read the $300-550 part in the thread title right? in case you missed it, his budget is $300-550. That Rules out plasma. And btw, LG makes plasma as well, and I work with TV's everyday. I'm not saying LG because I'm some sort of fanboy, but the three brands i listed are the three I see coming in to the shop for repair THE LEAST.

panasonic is great, that's what I myself own. The OP's question was what was the best.

Toshiba has come a long way. I have had a couple different Aquos LCD's and been impressed. I have one in the living room that I picked up for a low price. But I like my Toshiba better. Only downfall to it in my eyes is no PIP. BUt I can live with that. Current models are both reasonably priced. I prefer buying at Costco, as their warranty is the best.
