XFire 6870 for 1680x1050?

Seeing as 6870s can be had for just over $100 after ebaying games/rebates it seems like a great time to xfire mine. I'm gaming at 1680x1050, and don't intend to upgrade the monitors for a while.

I'm fairly happy with the framerates I'm getting now but would a 2nd 6870 which would allow me to max out the AA/AF/eyecandy be bottlenecked by 1gb vram at my resolution? I'd rather wait until the 7 series to upgrade if the consensus is the vram will be an issue.

I would just sit tight, the 6870 should do fine at that resolution, not ram bottleneck.

It certainly does great and has blown my mind away from the $150 I spent on a 9600GT years ago. However, the benchmarks for xfire 6870 look fantastic, and I think would really make BF3 even more enjoyable even though we have yet to see any idea on how it will run on anything. I think it may be safe to assume another 6870 would bring unplayable settings to playable, not just 80FPS -> 140.

Typically speaking, is 1680x1050 1gb territory or 1.5-2?

For the vast majority of situations the 1GB framebuffer is more than sufficient for that resolution.

1680x1050 is 768-1024mb territory.

1 6870 should be totally fine for your res. Hell, 1 6870 is pretty good for 1080p.

Guess I'll stick around with 1. Can't imagine they'll get more expensive anyway. Only concern is a new 7 series of same performance @ msrp will likely be twice the price, but time will tell.
