1055T Overheating damage/help

Thread Starter
I have been using my Phenom II 1055t for almost a year now. In the beginning, the stock fan was running loud, so i bought what i thought was an upgrade. When i recently upgraded my GFX card to a 560 Ti, i noticed some problems(huge frame drops and performance issues, in retrospect this might have been the cpu throttling). Being the huge noob to computers that i was, i seeked help from some more knowledged friends. They told my to check all my temps on my hardware (using CPUID HWmonitor, which could be a few degrees colder than it actually was), and it turns out that my Phenom was running hot. My sensors were reading 66 C, but it may have been even hotter.(i'd estimate around 72 C) i looked in my case, and the heatsink had a cake of dust on it >.< after cleaning it off, i got my idle temps to around 40 C, but under stress it still gets to be around 62-3 C. When i play games like BC2, the framerate stutters and is almost never smooth. I know the max suggested temp is 62, so i have a few questions. 1: how damaged is my CPU? i know there is no way for anyone here to know, but what kind of damage would running it that hot for a good 2 weeks be? (for all i know it could have been running this hot for months) I am a complete noob, so anything will be news to me. also, should i try and buy a new cooler? or just scrap this processor and buy a new one? i'm not sure what the damage is, and if i can i would like to attempt to save this processor (i'm almost broke). My last question is: should i run games with my case open until i get a new cooler? i know it will increase dust buildup and shorten the life of my fans, but i want to game until i can save up for a new fan/processor (Keep in mind i'm 16 and unemployed, the only money i make is painting fences XD) thanks for the help ahead of time, and sorry for making you want to pull your hair out on account of my stupidity and inability to keep my hardware cool.

EDIT: would lowering the clocks via the BIOS keep the temp down? how would one do that?

also, for playing games, it seems my processor cannot keep up (maybe do to damage from overheating, or it reaching max operating temps currently) as in the gameplay stutters, meaning (maybe, i dont know) that the processor cannot keep up with rendering the frames. would lowering the framerate (Via VSYNC) or changing the max prerendered frames help? the default in the Nvidia panel is 3 frames for max prerendered, should i change that?

EDIT EDIT...EDIT well, i'm not sure what the problem is at this point. i have been asking around for a few weeks, people tell me it's not my GPU, its my CPU, and others tell my visa versa. everything is running hot in my case, and my games aren't running right. i will continue to test everything, and hopefully get things running smoothly before BF3

What are you currently using to cool it?

Case/case airflow can have quite a bit to do with CPU cooling, just so you know...
Your CPU probably isn't damaged. I would only start to really worry about damage if it's getting over 80C. A new cooler is always recommended over stock though. As for the stuttering, are all your drivers up to date?

yes they are up to date. i originally thought the problem was with the new graphics card, so i tried resetting drivers and also tried various version (be it 266.66, or the most up to date ones) and nothing changed. however, when i cleaned the dust off my processor and got it running 10 C cooler, the main dips subsided and were replaced with mild stuttering. im not sure about the not over 80 C thing, because everyone tells me that the phenoms throttle when over 62 C. (which is backed up by the max operating temp on the main website)

as for everyone else's feedback: yes i am aware case cooling is a big factor. my current case has plenty openings, and lots of airflow around the processor/GFX card. HOWEVER the case is running pretty hot as well, and i will probably need to replace it along with my CPU fan. my questions are: how damaged is my CPU, and should i run with my case open to prevent overheating for a short period of time (very temporary solution)

i am not entirely sure which model, but it looks something like this:
http://www.frys.com/product/5019065?...H:MAIN_RSLT_PG

i've been told it's a PoS, which is backed up by it's inability to keep my CPU cool.
(may be partly my fault, but i always keep it running at 100%. i may need to check the thermal paste)

Reseat your heatsink with better thermal paste. That thing is MILES ahead of the stock cooler.

AMD CPUs don't throttle at 62C, that's really just a *recommendation*. I've gone past 75C before (for just couple minutes). No throttling.

so would that lead you to believe the issues are from the 560 Ti? (for stuttering gameplay) everything in my case runs hot, with the 560 the hottest maxing out at 75 C

75C isn't bad for a GPU.

Do you have another system to try the 560 Ti in to see if it's the problem? Or another graphics card to put in your sig rig?

unfortunately i do not have another computer to test this on (my old PC's SATA connectors all snapped, and basically the whole systems trashed)

unless i get my friend to bring his rig down here, there is no way to test it. i just ran a test game of L4D2, and it ran fine for a 10-15 minutes session (HWmonitor reported the hottest the processor got was 50 C, and the gpu at 70 C) this might be because it is midnight here, but i'm going to run some more tests (BC2 in dx9/11) to figure out exactly what the problem is. i have been testing stuff and asking around forums for a good two weeks now, and i'm not sure what the problem is. i guess all this hardware management and understanding is getting to be a little too much for a highschooler XP
