Need some suggestions for 1st build

Thread Starter
Hello everyone!

Recently decided to start building my 1st computer. Got tired of buying HP/dell computers every 3 or so years with horrible mobo/PSU to upgrade with.
For the most part, I will be using this computer to play some games on 1080x1920.

Parts that I already bought.

RAM :G.Skill 2x4gb 1600 - $45 from Newegg deal few days ago.
SSD :Crucial M4 128gb SSD - $193

I am open to suggestions for everything below:

CPU: i5 2500k
MOBO:Asus P8P67 Pro (R3.1) (Both bundled together 357.20 after tax @ microcenter)

GPU : msi gtx 560ti twin frozr 1gb ~$220 (Open to Suggestion)
dual monitors 2x 23
-U2311H
-SM2333T

CASE : A decent Mid Tower for a good price?
PSU : Need Suggestion
HSU : Need Suggestion

I plan to overclock the CPU and the GPU, partly why i m building the computer. Just thought it would be fun to try it.

Questions
1)Also, what do you guys think about just having an SSD without a HHD ? I really don't use that much storage to begin with.
2)I do want to play Battle Field 3 / Diablo 3 in the future, do you think sli will be necessary?

Thanks OCN!!

You may want to plan on getting a larger HHD to go along with the SSD somewhere down the road, especially considering the size of games. I'm sure Battlefield 3 and Diablo 3 will take a significant portion of your SSD.

Also, I've heard that BF3 requires over 1GB of VRAM. I'm assuming that this is only the case for highest/near highest settings (if you want the best eye candy ).

If you just want a cheap case that does the job, you could look at a few Antec cases, such as the 100 or the Three Hundred (it's actually spelled out!). They are relatively modest looking, but they are solidly built IMO.

do you guys think I should stick with this graphics card?
The graphics card is fine if you want to do <= 1080P gaming.
If you go dual monitor gaming however then you might want something like a 580.

The other choices look fine and at the moment 8GB ram is more then enough for games.
You forgot about a CPU cooler, for that you can choose either CM Hyper 212+ or Xiggy Aegir for budget choices or Noctua D14 for something more expensive but one of the best air coolers.

Also agree on a standard HDD for data like a WD Cavier Black.

Get the Rev 3.0 Asus P8P67 Pro, not 3.1.

A corsair HX650 PSU will suit your needs perfectly, plus it's modular! Can't go wrong there. If you want a little more power and room for future upgrades you could go with a Corsair AX750. Either way you go, they're both great power supplies.

CPU Heatsink: if you're on a budget, get the Cooler Master Hyper212+. If not, get the Noctua NH-D14.

Case: there's so many options here and it's really going to come down to A) how much you want to spend, and B) what kind of look you're going for. Cooler Master, NZXT, and Antec are generally pretty good brands and are widely used on these forums.

Definitely agree with above posters on the HDD. Get a 1TB W.D. Black or 1TB F3 Spinpoint. They both run about $50 each.

GTX560Ti will be fine for BF3 @ 1080p. You might get slightly bottlenecked by the 1GB VRAM if you have everything maxed, but this is purely speculation. Nobody knows the exact requirements and the Alpha didn't have a lot of graphics tuning done. If you want to spend more, you can get a 570 1238MB, or if you don't mind ATI you could get a 6950 2GB. Either way you go, you'll be able to enjoy both games you listed at almost-max settings.

I heard the only difference between 3.0 and 3.1 was just the USB made by different companies?

Is there more to it than that since you recommend going for the 3 instead of 3.1.

for PSU i decided to get CORSAIR CMPSU-650TXV2 - $70 AR
and GPU i got the 560ti msi hawk 1gb - $240 AR

i5-2500K with ASUS P8Z68-V LGA or Gigabyte Z68X-UD3H-B3 - back up graphics is always a good thing especially when u can overclock it

Cooler Master V6GT, Thermaltake Frio, Thermalright Silver Arrow, Noctua NH-D14 - any of these are great coolers at similar price points

Fractal Design Arc Midi, Lian Li PC-9F, Corsair Obsidian 650D - just a few for suggestive purposes

WD Caviar Black 1 TB - as recommended as SSD's fill quickly even when u do the tweaks needed to stop that from happening

Corsair TX650,750,850 V2 - depending on single card or dual card setup & which 2 cards for recommending the 750/850W units

any gpu from 560Ti to 580 for single (650W psu) or go dual 560Ti (750W psu) or dual 570/580 (850w psu) - taking in consideration of the boards I recommended as both have dual x8 slots so upgrades are doable in the future.

Good luck with your choices & enjoy the new machine

everything looks good, id buy a seasonic x-560W or the x-650 if you plan on going SLI. Case id buy Coolermaster haf X if not haf 932. Heatsink, prolimatech megahalem keeps my 4.7ghz 2500k at 30C idle...nuff said.

If you get the right case and take your time with cabling you don't need a modular psu. It may take some extra time & effort but it's so worth it, plus it saves you some cash to spend elsewhere
