[Eurogamer] Battlefield 3 PC main menu is battlelog - Page 2

That is a good point. It might be an Ubisoft-like online DRM. I do not think it was possible to play BF Heroes offline.

Sure most of the game is online multiplayer. It is just more of an annoyance if you cannot play offline for just single player.

I kind of like this. It's convenient to have your stats page and server browser in the same place and it's also faster to load a page than start the game, watch the logos, etc.

My only issue is browser support. EA better support all the popular browsers...

Then you wont be able to play online.

Just like what happened with Bad Company 2 that DID have an in game server browser.

If their servers crash due to load, it doesn't matter whether you're receiving info via a web browser or a game browser.

A crashed server is a crashed server.

I would like to believe however, that the single player can be played offline.

Well, that's the same as if the stats servers for BC2 went down, the whole multiplayer wouldn't work, then. This Battlelog is pretty much the same as that. The gameservers have a connection to the stats servers, if the server can't connect to the stats servers, no-one can connect to the gameserver.

It's very similar to how it works now, also, the Alpha was for testing some of those very issues.

Yeah, that's it, isn't it? It was the same for BC2, the only difference here is that Battlelog is the equivalent of the in-game browser from BC2.

I remember when BC2 first come out and there was some strain on the EA stats servers that made the game unplayable for perhaps a week. That was promptly sorted and I expect Battlelog to be fairly solid in that respect.

This idea reeks of "free-to-play"... Except you're paying for it.

Speculation on my part, assuming they do allow off line single player.
No that's not accurate. The battlelog system is not going to be a part of the browser like it was for the alpha test, it's going to function entirely through Origin. The reason that internet browsers were used during alpha was so that they could essentially control most of the functionality and User control rights, primarily so that it couldn't be reverse-engineered, or used after/outside of the alpha test itself.

Come on man, use your brain. The Pay-to-play battlefield game had no entry costs, hence the purpose of charging for weapons and upgrades. Battlefield 3 obviously has the $60 up front cost, so it is "pay-to-play" in the standard sense that you have to buy the game like any other game. After that, there are no subsequent fees, and this has been stated and restated over and over again over the last 6 months.
