Asus VE249H

Thread Starter
Hey guys,

There is an open box sale at my local store. Is $150 USD a good deal for the Asus VE249H ? I will be using this monitor primarily for FPS gaming. I see that it is 5ms and not 2ms, although I know those numbers are not always accurate when it comes to real life ghosting / input lag.

Basically...

1) Is this monitor worth $150 ?
2) Is there noticeable ghosting / input lag ?
3) Is this monitor descent for gaming ?
4) Would the Asus VH series be better ?

Thanks guys / gals.

1) Is this monitor worth $150?
I suppose.

2) Is there noticeable ghosting / input lag?
Yes. The entire VE series is known for ghosting. There's a few videos on Youtube if you search "ASUS VE Ghosting". Input Lag is not a problem.

3) Is this monitor descent for gaming?
Yeah. It would be pretty decent if you could get past the ghosting (which in my experience, did not occur in game). I owned the VE247 for a few weeks before returning it. It was a beautiful monitor and had a great picture, but considering I bought Two for $340 for a dual monitor setup, I wanted to be 100% satisfied with my investment, and the Ghosting just kinda bothered me. It's truthfully not that noticable unless you have great vision or you're rather close to your monitor looking for it, but it was a deal breaker for me personally.

4) Would the Asus VH series be better?
I have no personal experience with the VH series but it is the more popular line of ASUS monitors. It does not have the ghosting problem the VE/VS line does from the many reviews I've read while considering it. I ended up personally going the Dell IPS route, but I don't think I would of been disappointed with a VH monitor had I gotten one.

1) Is this monitor worth $150 ?
Yes. It's a good deal, but if you around to try and catch a Newegg Open Box it can be had for <$100.

2) Is there noticeable ghosting / input lag ?
Like above poster said, there is ghosting but input lag is minimal. The ghosting that does exist will not be noticeable in games at all.

3) Is this monitor descent for gaming ?
Yes, but as always, there's better. However, for $150 it's pretty good all around (specs, colors, size, etc.).

4) Would the Asus VH series be better ?
For purely gaming? Yes. You can get a VH series 23" or 24" for around ~$85 if you are able to catch Newegg Open Box.

Asus VE278Q here, with no ghosting problems.

Actually the VS series while it does suffer from the same Ghosting issue the VE series monitor does it can very easily be fixed by turning trace free down from 100 to 80. After you do that the issue disappears completely.

Thanks for the help guys, I may wait for new egg to post an open box just to save some money. I have one more question... Given a budget of $250 (prefer to stay around $200 if possible though)... what would the best monitor be? Of course I do not want horrible IQ, although I will mainly be using it for gaming including FPS. I want to stay with either a 23 or 24 inch and prefer LED although it is not a deal breaker... would there be a better choice than this Asus?

U2312HM
U2311M

The U2312HM is the new-er LED version. They won't be in stock until a week or so into Next month according to Dell's website, but the UltraSharp line is on sale quite a bit, and even when it's not, Dell is known if you call them up to usually honor a sales price so You'd probably be able to snatch one for ~$259-ish with free shipping.

Are you sure? If you have Chrome or Firefox, enable the Bookmark Bar and add a few things to it, and then Drag the window slowly while looking at the text/icons on the bar. You should see the white ghosting trail pretty effortlessly unless ASUS stepped it up for their bigger monitors in the line.

Please disable overscan in the monitor OSD and the ghosting should be gone.

I've owned 4 monitors from the VE series and none of them have had any problems with ghosting.

I already returned mine. It you held down the Menu button while powering the monitor, it'd bring up a screen which would allow you to disable "OverDrive" making the ghosting issue disappear, but it would turn back on if your resolution changed, you turned off/on the monitor, it went to sleep, etc. making it a pain in the rear.

But, like siryak has said in multiple posts, the VS line seems to be an ideal choice being that you can diminish the problem without using the steps above that were required for the VE lineup.

It's there. You just haven't looked for it. Like in the second post on this thread, the problem is very minimal and can only be seen if you're looking for it but was a deal breaker for me personally as I like to be 100% satisfied with my investment and once I knew the problem was there it was hard for me to shrug it off.
