Phenom II x4 955 Overclock

Thread Starter
Hello fellow overclockers.

So, I thought I would try overclocking my CPU today, and it went better than expected. Seems to be stable at 3,8 ghz running prime95 for about 30 minutes, getting 53-55 degrees.
I want to hear your opinions though. I'm not that much into overclocking, and I simply just increased the multiplier, and it seems to work just fine. Should I be doing anything else than increasing the multiplier?

Here is a picture of my results:

My motherboard is a Gigabyte GA-990XA-UD3.

You really want to Overclock the cpu-nb. 2.6-2.8 ghz tends to be where most of them get to. That will make a huge difference in performance.

Could you give me some advice on what would be a safe overclock for that? I don't want to do something wrong here

So, tried overclocking the nb to 2,2 ghz now. Seems to be running fine, about 30 minutes of prime95.

But is the temps for my nb and cpu reasonable, or should I be careful?

I notice a very high TMPIN2. Check the mounting of your MOSFET heatsinks and northbridge heatsink and push down for improved contact (when the PC is off of course). i find those with the push pins to be fairly loose on this motherboard.

By huge he means maybe 2FPS on a game. Nothing you'll ever notice but doesn't hurt.

What kind of cooling are you using? Temps seema bit high.

I tried doing that, but temps didn't seem to drop at all. I clocked the northbridge back to its default (2000 mhz), but still seems to be around 70 degrees under load. I am guessing that better airflow in my case will solve this problem?

So, overclocking the northbride won't be beneficial or what?
And, I am using some cheap aftermarket CPU cooler I got about two years ago. Getting a max of 58 degrees under load with the 3,8 ghz overclock, should I be worried?

Northbridge clock is irrelevant to the northbridge on the motherboard just so you know (NB clock pertains to the integrated memory controller on the CPU).
The chipset or MOSFET heatsink probably not making very good contact. TMPIN2 is either of those. On my system that temp is fine.

Get a Hyper 212+, they're cheap and very effective. Overclocking the NB base clock won't gain you much performance wise, but since many mobos disable Cool-n-Quiet after 17.5 multiple, raising it will allow you to lower your CPU multiple and get CnQ working. You'll have to adjust the multiples of CPU-NB, RAM and HT though since they will all increase. I ended up with 229x17.5 for 4.0 with my B55 to get CnQ working, but I needed to raise VCore and tune some other settings in BIOS. At 20x200 it was more stable at less voltages but no CnQ.

NB frequency (CPU-NB) will gain performance in some apps but not like the gains from CPU overclocking. For gaming, the gains are very minor so don't stress about it. It's worth raising if it's not too much trouble.

I am not too worried about my CPU temps at the overclock I have atm. I'm getting a max of 58 when it have been running for about an hour, and it doesn't go over that.
But it seems like my NB temp is getting too high. I tried pushing down on the heatsink, but I see no change. Any tips on what I can do, apart of buying an aftermarket heatsink for it?
