DNS and other issues with internet

Thread Starter
I just had TWC install my internet today. They were having some trouble getting it to work for me when they were here and once they had one glimmer of it working they left. Soon after they left the problems began to happen again.

I'm no modem/DNS expert, I'm hardly even a novice at that. But I'm pretty sure there are several things wrong here.

I've had multiple error messages when loading pages. I'll provide screenshots of some of the ones I've seen so far.

Overall when trying to load a page it will either:
  1. Load successfully
  2. Not load at all
  3. Come up with a DNS error
  4. Say it couldn't load the page and offer a redirection link to try again

I ran across a thread on here that mentioned:
  1. going to the network and sharing center
  2. click change adapter settings
  3. right click my internet and click on properties
  4. double clicking TCP/IPv4
  5. then change my dns server address to 8.8.8.8

This seemed to work, but about an hour later the problems came back.

So I unplugged my modem/wireless router and then waited the 10 seconds, plugged it back in. Still no change. It seems as though it works when it wants and doesn't when it doesn't want to.

I also tried following some of the steps on the error messages that come up when trying to load a page, but those didn't work as well.

I'd hate to have to call TWC back out, since they didn't really seem to have any idea on how to fix it either.

Any help is greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance!

have you reset the windows stack?

To open a command prompt, click Start and then click Run. Copy and paste (or type) the following command in the Open box and then press ENTER:cmd
netsh int ip reset resetlog.txt
netsh winsock reset catalog

I'm having trouble finding the Run button hahaha. I'm sorry. I'm a HUGE novice when it comes to network setup stuff.

You might not have the run command in your menu.

If not, you can select it to show there by:
Right click taskbar>properties>start menu>customize
Scroll down and make sure the box next to run command is checked

...or...

Just go to Start>all programs>accessories and go straight to command prompt.

You might also play around with your DNS settings, but I would think the problem is in your router. Are you using a separate modem and router or a combo? Usually you can leave your DNS settings on your NIC on automatic. The 8.8.8.8 is a Google DNS server if I'm not mistaken.

Just my 2c worth...hope it helps,

Rich

Try to hook your computer directly to the modem, unless it is a combonation of a router. Connect directly through the modem, and see if you can connect to the internet. (auto settings). And, if you can, it must be a router issue. I've had this happen before.

When you set the DNS settings, you really should put an alternate DNS entry as well (golden rule of nameservers is to always have at least two in case something happens to one of them). The 8.8.8.8 server is one of Google's DNS servers, the other you need to use is 8.8.4.4. I'm not too positive what could be happening with everything else, but it does seem that TWC's DNS settings weren't working at all, while Google's were fine for a bit.

It's a combo deal. And you were right, the box wasn't checked hahahah. I'm inclined to agree with you on the router issue. I only say this because initially they hooked up their base modem without the wireless. And although it was for a brief moment, it didn't seem to have any of the problems that this one is having.

I got on the phone with their tech support, and wouldn't you know it, it starts working again. Now it's being finicky again and the advice the tech support guy gave me on what to take note of isn't helping.

He told me to take note of which lights were either "fully lit", "blinking", or "out". They were all fine according to him when we talked, and I've noticed the lights haven't changed when the internet screws up...

I'm going to give what that other guy said a quick try before I repost.

It's a combo. How can I tell if I'm connected directly through the modem if it's a combo?
