IPS panels and polarized glasses

Here's a technical question: I went to Best Buy today and was wearing polarized sunglasses. There was an LG IPS236V among the dozen or so monitors they had displayed, and I was wondering why it wasn't turned on like the others. After looking at it from a different angle, I saw that it was turned on, just extremely dim. On a hunch, I took the sunglasses off and saw that the monitor was perfectly fine. So obviously polarized sunglasses react with IPS panels in such a way that it makes it impossible to see the display. The other monitors (all TN) were all fine.

Can anybody please explain this to me from a technical standpoint? Just out of curiosity?

I have an S-PVA with a TN next to it and they both go black at certain angles with polarizing glasses, I know its not an explanation but AFAIK all LCD monitors polarize, you'd just need to have your glasses polarization at 90 degrees to the monitors for it to fully stop the light.

LCD technology is based on crystals blocking polarized light. The crystals are lined up in way to block the polarized light when on and don't when off. If the light was not polarized, the the crystals would have to completely block the light in all directions. It basically is MUCH easier to block polarized light than unpolarized light... so LCDs polarize the light.
