Help: Computer Won't Recognize Windows

Thread Starter
so I feel really stupid about this, but I'm not all that educated in software. i have been running windows 7 on my laptop since i got it two years ago. there were four partitions of my HDD; there were two tiny ones (106mb and something like 50mb) and two main ones (460gb and 17gb). the 50 and 106mb ones had information in them, i dont really know what, but i think it may have been integral to windows. the 460 was where windows is installed, and has about 150gb free. the 17gb was empty.

now what i tried to so was install Ubuntu 11.04 using USB on to the 17gb partition, but I needed a SWAP partition, so for some reason i thought it would be smart to resize one of those tiny partitions (this is where my lack of any common sense comes in).

when i did that, the following screen told me that the 106mb partition, which i tried to resize, became 65, but the other 40 was no where to be found. along with that, the 17gb partition no longer said empty, under space available it now says "unknown." this scares me a bit, so i reboot and set HDD as priority and it tells me no operating system found. i boot back up through the USB disk and not even Ubuntu could find an OS.

when i told Ubuntu installation to resize that little partition, did i wipe it out? is there any way to get it back? was that partition really that important? i'm just confused as to why, if windows is installed on an untouched partition, can i not boot it up?

i haven't even installed the linux yet, it's just running from my USB disk.

EDIT: i might add that i am currently backing up all my files through linux, but i do not know my verification code for windows.

linux could have whiped your MBR,
also, windows cant read linux partitions,
Try Using GPARTED you can format the partitions back into NTFS or FAT32
