I think the best approach is to use ubuntu extracting the squash filesystem
is easy remove some apps or you can create your own then squash it back
and ready to use. I created a bootable linpack (intel and amd) with ubuntu
last time way back 9.10 version, but to tell you honestly it's hard to maintain.
