Trouble with 4.2ghz i7 950

Thread Starter
Can't get 200 CPU host bus speed to be at 200 mhz with 21x multiplier and stay stable. I've seen other people have vcore at 1.29 but mine is at 1.39 and still wont work. I'm pretty new to this, so I'm guessing there are a bunch of other things involved. Here are some pics. I would really really appreciate any help to just get it to stay stable at 4.2.

It doesn't overheat. At 4.0 ghz with prime95 it sits at 65c. It seems pretty stable, although I haven't tested for 12 hours yet. Just showing that it's kinda close to being good for 4.2ghz, but it just won't be stable for more than 20 seconds in prime95 at the settings shown in the picture. For the 4 Ghz I have vcore at 1.35v, bus speed at 200 mhz, and everything else the same as the pictures.

Also, the CPU VTT (QPI) says +250 mV, and that makes it be 1.45v total. 1.2 is default.

Now I got it to stay pretty much stable. I haven't done long term testing with prime95 (12 hours), but it seems pretty good. But, I have my vcore at 1.41v. Will that make my CPU not last at least 3 years?

I wouldn't go any higher than that really, you could always work your way down in vore, testing, lower it one notch, rinse repeat.

Possibly, but it was unstable 2 notches down so I think this is probably best. Why does my cpu take so much vcore anyways? Did I get ripped off by intel? I've seen people get i7 950s to 4.2 ghz with 1.26vcore

Try turning HT off and see how much Vcore do u need to be stable.

I cant either, anything past 185 for me is tricky...

Try a few variables, different multi & BCLK..
I am assuming your trying to get the 200 BCLK for the 1600 Ram, but also try a lower BCLK, and lower ram freq & timings...

I have 1600 ram that defaults at 7-9-8-24, but run it at 1475 - 6-8-6-21 and there is no performance difference...

I turned off HT and it resulted in me not being able to get stable at 185 bclock and 23x multiplier. I turned up the bclock to 200 and made multiplier at 21x so now it seems better. As for vcore, I can't have it be stable anywhere below 1.4v, with or without HT.

Well for a 4.2 OC 1.4v is about the bottom end of average from what I have seen, most people need 1.4 - 1.43 to get stable....

The multi & bclk is just trial and error, each cpu & board will react different. Some may like a 20 or 22 multi, others my repspond better to the 21 & 23.

The bclk is based off the board, but I would assume the FTW3 can handle 200 - 220 without issue..

What are your CPU VTT & QPI PLL voltages set to? (I use evge eleet to get a reading, its rather accurate)
