Help with my ubuntu/linux problem? - Page 2

post #11 of 22
Login and type startx to start the X server. If it won't start then there is probably a problem in /etc/X11/xorg.conf. I believe that the installation of the NVIDIA drivers edits this file automatically for you and it may have buggered it.

The command to start up the X server [which handles the GUI] is 'startx' or 'xinit'. If the install is starting up without a GUI, it means X is probably having trouble starting up, and we need to find out why. So, log in, type out 'startx' without using sudo, and post a screencap of what it spits out.

Okay, it's having issues starting up the X server because the nvidia module isn't loaded. Try typing this:

Code:
sudo modprobe nvidia

it says: FATAL: Module nvidia not found.

Okay, something went wrong installing your graphics drivers. To get a display back up, we're going to fall back on the vesa driver.

do this:

Code:
sudo nano /etc/X11/xorg.conf
That will open up your X config file in a CLI text editor.

using the arrow keys, scroll down until you reach section that says 'Device'. Under that section, it should say:

Code:
Driver = "nvidia"
or something similar [I forget the exact syntax]. Change 'nvidia' to 'vesa' and press [Ctrl]+[X] to exit. It will ask if you want to save the file, press [Y] and it will ask for a filename. Just press [Enter] to use the same filename.

Then run startx again.

Lol it's no problem. Linux can be daunting, but it's just not Windows.

If you want to learn to play around with Linux, this entire forum section has some amazingly helpful people.
