One Month 24/7 PSU / Energy question?

One month down folding just about 24/7

$165 bill

Normally I game and turn off my rig. Now that I'm running 24/7.. I'm more power conscious... so

I have a 1200 watt psu (my last 775 was 3 sli) ...

My question is how PSU's work.

Do PSU's pull the watts as it's labeled OR based on what my components need? or something else

Second questions - I have a cyberpower 1500avr/900W UPS. How does that affect consumption?

Just wondering how to be more energy efficient.

I'm no electrical expert, but from what i know PSU's pull power from the wall based on their efficiency rating. I could be wrong though... Ie; a PSU with a 85%+ efficiency would be more cost conservative.

Actually a larger power supply (1200w) will be more efficient than a smaller one because it will not be under full load. Power supplies are not the most efficient when they are under heavy stress, therefore a 1200w psu pulling 900w is more efficient than a 900w psu pulling under full load. Obviously a psu with a higher efficiency rating will use less power under the same load.

I don't know it looks like my psu is actually more efficient under full load

The 80% or greater criteria must be maintained at 20%, 50% and 100% of rated load. Power supplies typically become more efficient as the load is increased. The 20/50/100 rule ensures consistent efficiency as loads go up and down.

yeah I thought it was pretty cheap from what I've read here ... ~1000 sqr condo ... it was about $110 increase

I'm typically very power conscious in general though

also I'm not in florida, never need AC and have steam heat

What are you talking about? Looking at that same chart all efficiency numbers are the highest at 50% load while they are lower at 20% and 100% with a few exceptions. 50% is the most efficient load.

Load works like this:

You notice that the larger capacity is more efficient at the 300w load because it is only at roughly 50% load.

As said, as rule of thumb PSU achieve their highest efficiency at ~50% load. Looking at the 80+paper for your PSU it is seen that your PSU (1200W one) is most efficiency at 50 too, and since it's rated at 1200W you should be on a load of 600W if you wanna be at your PSUs best. With both that i7 and the 5970 folding I do think you're in the ballpark and pulling about 700W from the outlet.
