Would a single MSI N580GTX Lightning 3GB be smoother with less microstutter than SLI? - Page 2

from what i have been told the 100% maxed setting on 3 monitors will still drop your frames quite a bit even with the 3gb cards in sli.

That's why you need high performing cards. Going from three 470s to three 6950s made a huge difference mainly due to the vram advantage of the Caymans. But, I still couldn't max out Metro, either it would crash or it would be horrendously slow. I'm sure the extra bite from the 580s with the extra vram will allow me to max out metro with decent game play.

How are you doing in metro with 3x 580s ? With that surround set up?

Waiting for waterblocks and a new psu to arrive next week. I should have some results by next weekend. I really don't like to push any card setup in a three-way sandwich configuration (stock cooler)

These are the non-amps or I wouldn't be able to fit three together. But, they are basically reference designs using double capacity vram.

Avoid the 570's, they are poor quality.

Unless you get one of the ones with better VRM's.

That was due to a bad batch. No longer true as long as you are oc'ing properly and carefully (as you should regardless of your card unless you enjoy killing your hardware).

well 1920-1080 gaming in bc2 aa32 and at16 120hz = 935 ram eating up avg 90-120fps forcing dx10 more tho for more fps. now i don't like sli pain to setup, an alot more power killed. i did not see improvement in bc2 with 480sli compared to single other then aa 64 on. But i want Higher low fps count (got driver transparency AA on 8 X too) single fastest card is way to go.

SLI is not riddled with problems. Microstutter doesn't happen on every game, and is typically only noticeable with lower FPS. If you compare 30fps on a single card to 45fps on a SLI setup, IF the game has microstutter, the smoothness will be about equal.

But it's DEFINITELY not the case that microstutter erases the FPS advantages of SLI, such that you don't end up with higher playable settings in SLI vs one of the same card. There's just the occasional isolated circumstance where MS is a problem, and in this case, if you're at low FPS to start with, the addition of a 2nd card for SLI may not 'feel' all that much smoother.

SLI is most useful for those game/settings combos that are running around 40-60fps with annoying dips to 30 range. You add another card, there's a real good chance you'll end up noticing a big difference in playability and smoothness, getting yourself a steady 60.
