8800 GTS 100% Load while browsing

Thread Starter
This just happened a moment ago and had me freaked out.

I was playing Minecraft earlier, noticed that I was getting some lag spiked every 20-30 seconds or more. I would go from 70 fps to around 8 and then back up to 70. MSI afterburner had my gpu at its normal 40% or so load.

So needless to say, that was annoying. I stopped, and started browsing the Internet.

All of a sudden Aero was disabled (Running Win7 64 bit) and the 8800's fan spun up to 100%. I checked Afterburner which showed the GPU usage going from 0 to 100% rapidly back and forth, all the while climbing about 10c in less than 20 seconds. I freaked out and started telling my friend, who was on vent, and he said that I sounded echoey and static. He said that it went away as soon as the gpu went back to normal.

It did stabilize after about a minute or two. I was going to shut my computer down for fear of something breaking even worse, but then the fan slowed and the temperature went down.

Its now at about 70c and at 0-3%, which is normal.

What happened? Did my motherboard just short or something? I wasn't able to check my cpu usage (too busy freaking out) so I have no idea if that is the problem.

Thanks for any help.

Its a GHOOOOOOSTTTT

No, well maybe, but unlikely. Restart it, maybe just a driver glitch. Or if it persists bake it, or call a preist, for the ghost problem.

Bake it?

How do you figure solder points would have much of anything to do with this problem?

I actually had restarted it once earlier for the minecraft spikes, but I will again.

So you think its the GPU? I have had this guy for years. But I've never had any problems before today. My motherboard is usually the trouble maker.

Well he asked for help, i gave it to him. Which is more than you did, since were not there to look we have to cover all the bases.

Restart. You can worry about baking it only as a last resort

Let's say he was to listen to you [small chance, but still], and go bake his card. he would void any warranty he had and could possibly just create a new issue where there was none.

I was just suggesting that your suggestion was probably irrelevant to his issue which is in and of itself advice.

I'd prefer we not play semantics over something stupid like this, so I'll end it here.

Baking is most definitely not a first resort. That's silly advice in this situation, Smobs. And just giving random advice out is not better than giving none.

What browser were you using when this happened? Some of them now have hardware acceleration ... maybe there's just glitches in the implementation of it in some browsers with certain drivers or cards, or ... who knows really .

I wouldn't worry about it unless you start having gaming issues. Could also turn off the feature in your browser, see if that fixes it ... or at least makes that problem not happen again. I know FF has hw accel support, not sure about other browsers.

This actually just happened to me about 10 minutes ago while browsing here, decided to sign up just to see what is going on.

Both my gpu/cpu hit 100% load for about 30 seconds and aero in windows stopped working similarly to when you get a driver error, but later corrected itself shortly after the gpu/cpu spike. The thing is I have gtx 570, which is only a week old and I have never personally witnessed anything like this happen before.

Maybe it's contagious... haha.

After closing out this thread my W7 aero turned off and my 6850s both went to 100% load for about 20 seconds...

I wouldn't be worried though honestly, that goes for OP and you.
