One Core Dead?

Hey Everyone,

For the past month or so, I've been having this problem with my OC'ed i5-750 (see my rig specs below). I noticed several things:

1) When I try to use a music-encoding program (dbPoweramp to those who know) to convert multiple tracks, there are only 3 of the 4 cores running at once. I have also ran Prime95 and only 3 cores are running through - the other core is sitting "idle" or "queued."
2) The CPU speed is always at max speed of 3.6 ghz, despite me having the power saving features (like Speedstep, C1 states, etc.) and thus, my temperatures are always on the high end (45C +). These are according to CPU-Z and CoreTemp.

I never had these problems until relatively recently. I never changed any settings from the BIOS since over a full year ago when I first put this rig together with my OC specs. Today, I also updated the BIOS but still no luck. (And yes, I restored my settings to default before flashing the BIOS; also, I am currently running the stock 2.67 ghz settings)

I am wondering, could my CPU be going bad or my motherboard (or another component perhaps?) I would hope not as it's only been like 14 months since I put this all together. Anyway to test if all 4 cores will work simultaneously? And perhaps get my power/idle saving features back so my CPU isn't at full throttle all the time?

On another note, I noticed my computer has frozen several times (right after startup, during an SC2 game, during CS4 editing, web surfing, etc.), and I've gotten some BSOD's.

Please advise on suggestions. Thanks all and have a good one.

my i5 stays about that idle temp when it's hott out. I also have one wild core that will heat up more than the others about 3-4c difference. Have you checked the affinity in task manager by right clicking on the process?

Hey there drnilly007,

Thanks for your quick reply and suggestions.

Ah ok. Yeah seems to be on average that temp. Well, when I check it, I too can have that "wild" core and sometimes the temp difference can be between 8-10 deg on one of them. I haven't checked the affinity in task manager. What is this and how do I go about it?

Thanks again.

Have you tried turning down your overclock and seeing if the problem is still there?

Affinity-open task manager and right click on a process and choose set affinity a box will pop up with option to set what cores run on that process 1-4, or if you dont know the process of a program right click on it and choose go to process then follow previous instructions.
but if you dont know about affinity then you probably wont have to change any of it because it defaults on all cores.

Thanks again for your help guys.

To Swift Castiel, I put all my settings back to default speeds, values, etc. and still the same phenomena.

To drnilly007, I tried what you said and clicked on a few random processes and they are checked with all four cores (tried Kaspersky, Google Chrome, etc.). I've never played with these before. Seems like all 4 cores are meant to be run on all applications.

This is sort of interesting. I wouldnt jump straight to saying that a core is dead, but if you have a spare HDD lying around, maybe see if you can install an OS on that and see if it's the same? Although at the moment it could be that a core is just not functioning at capacity
