Looking for a new GPU...

Thread Starter
As battlefield 3 is nearing and my rig is getting old its time for an upgrade...

I roughly know what GPU I want, nothing less than a 6950 2GB so have the ability to flash the bios to a 6970.
The cards I would be happy with:
6970 2gb
6950 2gb
6990
580 1.5gb
580 3gb

I live in Australia.... one of the most expensive countries. So If I can find a good deal on a 6990 or a 3gb 580 I will get that or I am tossing up the 1.5gb 580 and the 6970/6950 2gb.
I will be playing on a 24" 1080P monitor so no high resolutions, Love everything to be maxed for BF3.

If you have any suggestions on which cards would be a no - go, could you please say which ones so I don't get stuck with an expensive paperweight!

I also like the idea of having a 3gb 580 but at only 1080p is there any point..? I do have a native 1440 X 900 19" monitor next to me which I like to keep OCN on and my Steam contacts for quick access.

With the huge maps of BF3 will the extra Vram help out.?

I have read that alot of users on here shop from new egg. I have seen amazing deals on there only problem is I live in Australia as mentioned above. That means that new egg won't ship to me. I found a couple of sites like This. They work via signing up for a small fee then you get an american address which you can then purchase products from new egg and get it sent to them then forwarded to you.

If anyone has ever used this website or know of their reputation could you please advise me on there customer service, or if you know of any other websites similar I would appreciate it if you could share them with myself.

Thank you in advance.

The 6950 2gb is a good deal and should be more than enough to max BF3, its a good future-proof card.

As for flashing the bios to a 6970 a lot of new cards you cannot unlock the shaders but you can still edit the 6950 bios to the same clocks as a 6970 for about 97% the performance as a 6970.

Just make sure you buy one with a dual bios switch. I know the MSI twin frozer III are good cards and my sapphire dirt 3 edition have dual bios switches although my sapphire cannot unlock shaders.

Unfortunately no. IIRC a BF3 dev was on record saying a 580 won't max BF3 at playable frame rates. Nonetheless a 6950 is an outstanding GPU and I would certainly recommend it.

OP at 1080 the extra VRAM won't make a difference for you. The 1.5GB 580 will very likely outperform the 6950 2GB in BF3 as at that resolution you want the horsepower not the extra VRAM. If your on a budget you may want to consider a 480 as well. With Southern Isles right around the corner and Kepler trailing behind that, it's very hard to say that any of the cards you listed is future proof. Maybe one more reason to look at the 4XX series from NVidia.

A little off topic does that card run silent and cool?

Thanks for the quick reply. I would most defiantly get one with a dual bios switch if going for the 6950.

Thanks for the quick reply too. From what I have heard all the footage we are seeing if from GTX 580's. I was sure they would be running it at max settings so they can get there best graphics on show. I would like a card that will be out on release of BF3 and hoping I can get it before open BETA.
Thank you for the reply.
Ps: I must have missed that interview any chance you still have the link to it?

Edit: When is the release date for the southern Isles. I have one 5770 if I got another one could I run at low settings until they come out.... Not too long after release of bf3 I hope.

No =( I googled a minute ago for it but came up empty. IIRC it was a news post about a BF3 demo where a DICE employee made the comment. Sorry man. It was when they mentioned the system specs being used to demo it (a 580) and the interviewer asked if it would max it. DICE guy replied something like, "The system that will max BF3 has not yet been built."

Either way it was ambiguous, as what does max mean? Obviously everything at max settings, but I imagine several of today's GPU's in crossfire/SLI should attain decent FPS.

It does, runs max load around 61 degrees stock and idols at 50. It's probably the quietest part in my PC with a fan on it. I can barly hear my PC when its on.

Yes I also read the news article where the guy said a system that can max bf3 has not been built yet. But the game is not crysis 1 all over again. That was months ago and im sure their spending a lot of time into balance and optimization of the engine to run more smoothly.

Max at 1080p should easily be achivable with a 6950, but 1080p is not max resolution anymore. The game will obviously be harder to run on 1080p x3 monitors with eyefinity or monitors with resolutions above 1080p.

Also obviously a 580 will outperform a 6950, it costs more than twice as much too. A 480 will be loud and run hot. I really wouldent recommend either card.

One other thing, don't let anyone tell you you only need 1gb for 1080p. If you can affort a 2gb version go for it because its usefull to have and will futureproof you incase you ever want eyefinity or want to max out AA and other speical effects.

why wouldn't you recommend the 6950 cards? Also do you know anything about the HIS version?

Like if it might run cooler even though it has 1 fan I heard good things but i still don't know what to get yet and I'm not really a fan of Nvidia card.

Brought a brand new PC set up with 580's sli'd. Read that they are support multiple GPU with BF3, so I'm gonna have a shot at getting as close to maxing it as possible. I posted my new PC specs on a thread posted few hours ago on this forum section so I won't duplicate here
