Corsair 650D with RX240 (pics)

OK I see this question come up every now and again and often the answer comes back that you need to stick with an RS240 with the 650D. Now, if you just use the default mounting holes this is true. However there are options to fit a RX240 in the top of a 650D without cutting or modification.

Obviously the radiatior will fit in the top of the case just fine. The problem is when you try and install fans they don't quite clear the motherboard RAM slots or VRM cooling. One could use zip ties install the fans offset slightly as a solution, or one could fit the fans on the outside of the case, either pushing air in or pulling it out. There are pictures of said situations on the forum and those methods would work fine.

The other and in my view neater option is to offset the entire radiator by an inch, and screw it in place using the fan grill at the top rather than the predrilled fan installation holes. You will want a few washers to hold it in place like so:
650d032.jpg

Excuse the large washer! I have yet to source 4 of the same size, once I have done I'll spray them matt black so they fit in with the look of the feel of the case. It is a slight fiddle getting the screws to fit but it is possible and holds the radiator nice and strongly.

And for some pics of the insides.

Please excuse the tubing discoloration, it's dreadful. I grabbed the wrong Tygon clear (medical grade instead of food grade). I'll bin it and replace it with decent Primochill when I next dismantle. If you look at the res in the drive bay you can see the water is crystal clear, it's just UV discoloration of the tubing tongue.gif

My fans are GT AP-29s on a Sycthe fan controller, running in pull as intake. Once you ramp them up to >2000rpm they cool amazingly well, really offsetting the slightly non ideal nature of pull fans. Some will prefer to push as output anyway.

Anyway, I see this RX240 question come up here sometimes and thought I'd post my solution. Anyone else with an RX240/650D soltuion feel free to post as well, perhaps I could collect links to them in the first post as they come in.

Very nice, thanks for posting. Your tubing looks somewhat better than mine tongue.gif I see you've also gone for intake, I'm pretty happy with it in this configuration. There is great airflow over the VRMs etc as well with this method, even if it is marginally warmer air that has passed by the radiator.

What is wrong with your tubing? Did you pee into your res?

It's UV discolored really badly, it took only a few weeks to get that bad. You can see in the drive bay that the water in the res is crystal clear. I'll replace the tubing with Primochill next time I dismantle. That discoloured stuff is Tygon clear which I was happy with initally...

Thanks. Yes GPU cooling is definitely next on the agenda - after replacing that tubing that is tongue.gif Since I already have a decent cooler on my current GPU though I'll probably wait until a GPU upgrade then get a full cover block for it. In the future I also have in mind to get a second RX240 as front intake, that will give good scope for GPU cooling.

Hi there!

This is exactly what i have been looking for!

i have never water cooled before I recently got my 650d and want to water cool it however i am stuck as to which rad to get.

My specs are.
i7 2600k
Leadtek GTX 580

And now i am wondering if the rx240 kit would be enough too cool them both as well as the stock cooler or better? (non overclocked just want a better looking quieter pc)

would the pump be sufficient for a cpu + gpu circut?

Please let me know as im am really wanting to get this up and running. B-)
i think the pump is more than capable of pushing the water but im not sure a single 2x120mm rad (RX240) will cool both that well. maybe a single 120 in the back and the 2x120mm up top would be ok. hope that helps.

You'd be getting close to pushing it with a 2600K and a GTX 580 on a single RX240 but it would certainly work. An RX240 is very close to comparible with an RS360 after all. As already pointed out the pump certainly won't be an issue, it can handle plenty. If you don't overclock everything within an inch of it's life then I am sure an RX240 would cope perfectly well but I wouldn't expect really amazing temps from it.

I think the suggestion of an additional RS120 (or RX120 if it will fit) as rear exhaust is a good one. Once I go for GPU cooling as well I intend to find a way to get a second RX240 as front intake. You could alternatively get an RX120 there as front intake. You could even start off with the single RX240 with the intention of adding a second rad later down the line after you've see how the temps work out.

Let us know how it goes thumb.gif
