Why is 6770M choking up on video?

Thread Starter
Hello everyone. I wasn't sure if I should post here (since it's a graphics card issue) or in the laptop section (since it's a laptop). Anyhow, here goes:

I recently bought an HP DV7t Sandy Bridge quad core (i7-2630QM), with integrated Intel HD 3000 graphics, and an ATI 6770M. The laptop can switch between the graphics processors while running. When I try to play video (say, like a 4gb movie), the ATI card chokes up, stutters, and skips. When I use the integrated graphics, it runs fine.

I know Sandy Bridge's integrated graphics are renowned for their transcoding, but come on. The 6770M shouldn't have trouble. It's running WoW on Ultra at 50+ FPS. The integrated graphics can't touch that. Which leads me to believe something funny is at work.

If anyone has any ideas, suggestions, or shots in the dark, I'd really appreciate it.

A copy of the spec sheet:

Because it's a Radeon. Probably some sort of driver issue..

As usual.

Okay, one vote for drivers. Anyone else have more ideas?
Have you tried to update the drivers with a clean sweep first?

Not hating on ATI, but I've always had problems with their drivers/updates. If I can get them to work, they are great; but getting there is the problem.

Clean sweep meaning uninstall the old ones and then install the newest? Not yet. I'll get on it.

Yes. Make sure everything is removed. I've never needed to do a clean sweep, but others have and there are threads on the subject.

If that doesn't work, check back here. We'll get you sorted!

Decoding video as a GPU function has nothing to do with the number of shaders or cores or MHZ of the GPU. Being able to play games well has nothing to do with decoding video. GPUs with the ability to decode video streams get their ability to do so from a separate logic IC or an implementation of said logic in a integrated CPU/GPU. Generally speaking, that decoding circuit looks the same on an entire range of GPUs, so it doesn't matter if you buy a 6450 or a 6990 you are likely to get the exact same decoding power.

In other words, your 6770M is not likely to have a better decoder than the integrated decoder in the intel 3000 GPU. Granted, if things were working as you would expect, both options should decode the video just fine. In fact, you should have a 3rd option, CPU decoding, that should also work just fine as well. So that leaves us with a few possibilities:
1. Driver problems.
2. Settings problems.
3. Typical laptop power-saving features getting in the way of normal function
4. Conflicted hardware- both the intel3000 and 6770M might be trying to decode simultaneously, causing problems.
5. De-tuned or partially disabled or bad-bin decoder chip on 6770M purposely used because having 2 working decoders is unnecessary cost and redundancy for a consumer machine.

Good post mdocod. "AMD driver bad" is just getting too bland anymore. I promised not to comment on "AMD driver bad" posts anymore. But seeing mdocod's post, now that is an informative and unbiased comment even though he mentioned driver problem could be one of the issues. I could not have said it better. Sorry for the thread hacking - but felt the need to point out.

I wasn't slamming AMD's drivers. Updating the drivers is probably the easiest thing he can do that has a high possibility of fixing a problem. Plus, he gets the latest release of drivers.

The only reason I pointed to the drivers first (just trying to give him something to do instead of letting him hang) was because I have always had problems with AMD drivers. Ranging from my office computer's 5770 to my brother's 4250.

It looks like the drivers were the problem. I tried downloading them from AMD, but that wouldn't work and it directed me to HP. I downloaded the latest drivers there, and now the video playback is sweet, but Catalyst Control Center (and therefor the switchable graphics mechanism) won't launch, which kind of sucks when you want to run on battery.
