Should I rent a VPS?

Hello OCN,

I was wondering if I should take a go at VPS. I would probably rent one for one month and see whether or not I wan to invest my money in it. I am just curious as how they work. I've been dabbling in Ubuntu 10.10 Virtualbox and got a webserver w/ phpmyadmin along with vanillaforums going. But, I am also interested in online backup, ssh tunnel (if I can figure it out), a ftp server (maybe half seed box?), and maybe even a game server.

But, I am not sure a VPS of cheap price would cut it for everything I desire. I found from lowendbox a cheap VPS in a very nice price range of 40$/year or 3.75$/month with coupons. But, I am not sure it would fit my needs. The prices are here and the specs are here clicky!

And, the gameserver I would be interested in is a Call of Duty 4 Cracked, yeah I know it's old, but thats not a high priority. The online backup would be nice, but would it be enough bandwidth? I'm guessing it would be. I was looking at the 256 MB ram with 20GB storage with 1000GB BW.

But, I mostly just want to experiment with a VPS server. I would with a dedicated, but 100$ for a trial run, little too much smile.gif. Currently, I've got a free webhost at x10hosting.com. But maybe, I should just leave it alone? Thanks for the tips, just trying to learn my way into the field.

Edit: Storage/Cloud Backup is what I mean.

It will give you a good idea of what having a Dedicated Server will be like. Keep in mind with those specs, you might be pushing it.

Any recent COD server (From about COD4+) will use 250MB memory at minimum, and about half of your allocated storage.

Aside from that, I say go for it and start getting your feet wet. If you feel you need more power, or are ready to move on to a Dedicated Server, then you can do it when that time comes.

Well, I'll just wait until I am able to transfer some money to paypal so I can pay for a VPS because it won't pay with Debit card, but I figured out the domain thing. I am using namecheap. Thanks for the tips smile.gif
