PII x4 955 vs i3 2100 - Better overall chip?

Thread Starter
From benchmarks, it shows that, even though the 955 is a quad-core and the 2100 is a dual, they are pretty evenly matched in almost every aspect (2100 a bit behind in rendering and things like that)

But the 2100 beats out the 955 in gaming and such, and they are basically the same price. So, I gotta ask, if you had $125 to spend on a CPU, which would you buy out of these for heavy gaming and some video editing?

I am leaning towards the i3 2100 just due to the fact that it is Sandy Bridge... and obviously the 955 is not. headscratch.gif

if i had 125$ i would start saving money until i can buy i5 2500k
because even the LGA2011 that comes out is not going to be much better than i5 2500k

why would you buy i3 and later upgrade again?
Dual core are still okay but in future most games are gonna run above quad core

you don't wanna play like 50fps low settings with good graphic card & then laging like no tommorow right smile.gif?

so better get i5 2500k overclock 4.5ghz .. have fun for couple years lol

and phenom x4 955 ehh overclocking to 4ghz is hella alot of work..
even if you do you will still have bottleneck running 2 graphic cards...
and whatever you do intel i3 is still better in gaming...
oh and phenom x4 955 overclocking to 4GHZ needs alot of voltage and good cooler -_-"

oh well i3-2100 is still ok it has hyper threading so rendering videos .. doing some stuff will still be okay.. but i5 2500k 4 true cores is better

It's funny you should ask that. Because I'm helping out a bro build a rig, and he doesn't have the money for the i5 2500k right now, but he will around Christmas, and he needs a computer NOW (house had a flood).

So that is a reason why I would recommend the i3 2100 to him right now, or give him the 955 and (here it comes) hope that Bulldozer doesn't blow.

bulldozer is for sure gonna be better.. but don't expect 125$ it'll be 200$ or so ^^

depends what games your brother is playing ... Quad core is still better than dual core.. hyper threading is useless in gaming

Well, he plays a lot of simple games like Minecraft, Terraria and things of that nature. But he has already pre-ordered BF3, MW3 and a few other more demanding games so... I would expect a Quad-Core to perform better in those games.

What about using FRAPS? He does a lot of recording for his YouTube channel and I don't know if more cores will help with that, or if it is still all about the HDD.

There is no "for sure" about it. It may or may not be better. We have seen conflicting reports of BD's performance. Best to hold your opinions till you have some facts to base them on smile.gif

As far as the i3 vs P4, I would go for the i3. Later in the year, he can upgrade to the 2500k and be set. You could also go to a microcenter and get an i5 2500k for $179, if it is an option for ya.

here you go 179$ microcenter
just couple $ more and its so much better performance.. so much easier overclock.. its worth it..

paying a little bit more now is worth it

i5 2400 $149.99
http://www.microcenter.com/single_product_results.phtml?product_id=0354590

or i5 2500k $179.99
http://www.microcenter.com/single_product_results.phtml?product_id=0354589

i would buy i5 2400 instead i3 2100
