Overheating issues browsing, no gaming now..irked...HELP!

I have a Dell Studio & I'll list my specs at the end. Let me be clear from the get-go, I'm a total newb at this stuff. My computer has been overheating bigtime in the past few weeks, and it's only gotten worse. I've gotten some suggestions like a good cleaning of the cpu, etc., which I did yesterday, and there wasn't much there in regards to dust, etc., so it had no effect. Can someone plz point me in a direction to go to find out what the heck is up with this thing?

Let me add, now when I'm simply browsing like now, the fan will randomly kick up and the temp might spike up to 93 for 30 sec. or so, then cool back down to 70 and the fan will kick down again.

I ran a stress test yesterday and it passed everything.

Browsing the web etc. (load 2-22%), my temps are:

Core #0: 67c
Core #1 60c
#2 59c
#3 65c

And now if I even start a game, even a non-intensive one like 2K11,etc, it immediately jumps to 90+, up to 98 at times.

I do have EVGA precision installed, but have yet to really mess with it much. It is currently set at:

core: 600
Shader: 1500
Memory: 900
iFan: 90

Plz let me know if you have any questions and I'll do the best I can in answering them.

Thanks so much.

Chad

Sounds like you have a process using up your CPU, overheating could be the stock cooling that is on your PC.
Check the task manager and "show processes from all users" and sort by % cpu usage and see if there is anything greedy while you use your computer.
You might need to replace the thermal material between your cooler and cpu. Hopefully more people will chime in with more suggestions.

How thorough did you clean the dust? When I first got my i7 rig I used the stock heatsink for a year and neglected to clean it. Tried a stress test and the cores went up to 100 degrees in a couple minutes. So I took the stock heatsink off, cleaned off all the dust between the fins and on the fan, replaced the TIM and reseated cooler, load temps dropped to 85 degrees.

I was going to head out for some thermal paste and give that a shot this afternoon.

I did a pretty thorough job cleaning out the dust imho, so I don't think that's it...but I've been wrong before!

Newb question, but can I take a case fan out of an old computer of mine and put it in the one I am currently using? Do you simply use plastic ties to keep it in place?

Thank you so much.
