My 4th (or 5th) build and OC

Thread Starter
My first post...my first build was way back in '92 and it used a Cyrix CPU, a 486 with a whopping 12 MEGAbytes of RAM. I have a question later and hope you guys will let me digress a bit first.

I wanted to tell about my current (and first) OC success that I did using durch's awesome thread on how to do it right. I built this machine about 6 years ago and it was top notch then, but it needed some tweaking to get it up to running a program I dearly love; Empire Total War.

It's AMD of course, I've only built one Intel machine and that one was from parts I had for my mother to use as an E-machine, (the MOBO/CPU bundle was very cost effective). This machine has a Gigabyte M59SLI-S5 MOBO, Athlon 62 X2 5000+ processor, 2 - 1G chips of Aeron DDR2-800 memory, 2 - 120 GB SATA2 drives that I have striped (RAID 0) and 2 - Nvidia 7950GT in SLI. I had 2 old chips of Corsair DDR (1) memory that had heat spreaders on them and took them off to put on the Aerons, nice fit with real 10% silver paste, and the cooling solution for the NB, SB, and MOSFETs were likewise repaired with real thermal paste and cool very well. The other parts that need cooling are likewise well done, Zalman CPU, good air flow, sadly though silent solutions for the GPUs. They're next.

Using durch's steps, I was able to find the MOBO max bus speed to be 380mhz, and the CPUs max frequency to be 3109mhz. The memory turned out to be the problem child, as I'm guessing most of you guys know. Long story short, I wound up with these final values, Bus speed 310, CPU multiplier x10, HT multiplier x3 (SB>NB and NB>SB are at x5) CPU voltage 1.45v, and my red haired younger brother DDR2-800 memory running in 533 mode with 5-5-5-18-26-2t timings and a +0.1 volt increase on them and all the MOBO chips. This setup had yielded a 30,000+ 3DMark03 score. The CPU is running at 3092mhz (almost a 19% increase) and the RAM is running at 386.5mhz (one channel) as measured by CPU-Z. This is the highest memory frequency I can get and have CPU frequency be at or above 3000mhz. It's hot here in Fla and the ambient air is 80 degrees (A/C is on the fritz) but the CPU hasn't gotten over 55 degrees celsius during any of the ORTHOS stress tests, probably because of the huge Zalman cooler. I'll be running a 24 hour blended test when I finish this post.

My question is this, is it better to be running this OC setup than, say 2800mhz CPU speed and 350mhz memory speed with DDR2 set at 800?

Ooops! Sorry about the violation, I'm new here. Hey! Administrator! Delete this thread, it's another guy that doesn't read the instructions.
