Pump buzzing and vibrating. Help? Updated with Pictures! - Page 3

Looks like part of the housing that the ceramic ball fits into has chipped off, I don't think the ceramic ball should have them black spec's
I wonder what caused bits of the housing to break off.

Can you clean it up and test it ?

wiped the white ceramic and got the black stuff out. Do I need to put any kind of lube to it? or i can just prime it with water later when filling the loop?

3in1 oil was mentioned before, but I'm not sure about if it needs to be lubed or one should not do it at all.

straight from the Laing 12VDC pump manual
Quote:
The spherical bearing of the rotor/impeller unit on
the ceramic ball offers a number of advantages. One such
advantage is that the occurrence of bearing play – and the
associated increase in noise – is not possible due to the
principle involved. Consequently, the pump continues to
work quietly throughout its entire service life. The bearing is
self-realigning. It is lubricated directly by the medium being
pumped(wet rotor design). This means that the pump is
maintenance-free.
Since the rotor is always magnetically
held in the designated position, small particles of dirt do not
present a problem. Under normal conditions, it is impossible
for the rotor to become locked. Reliable starting is also
ensured even after long periods of shutdown.

Lube can mean grease or oil. I suggested 3in1 oil. Sure, Laing will mention that not lubrication is needed. Well that is for a healthy impeller with no damage of running dry or the fingers getting damaged. BUT, if the impeller shows a mechanical failure, then the 3in1 oil is your safe bet. As for lube (grease) stuff. avoid it.

Indeed, the noise is related to cavitation when running it on speed setting 5. Just run the pump on setting 4. That noise on setting 5 will in time destroy the impeller of the pump. Cavitation is the worse enemy of a pump.

^ What exactly causes cavitation could you explain it in a noob friendly manner smile.gif

if its cavitation im not sure why it ran for a week fine then started to make that sound.

I believe he already answered that, this is what he said...

Sounds like cavitation happening with the pump. That is, the loop is too restrictive for the pump to properly draw enough fluid and vapor bubbles actually form. Having the pump run faster can cause cavitation if there isn't enough flow to supply the pump.

Return to page two of your thread for a complete and detail explanation for cavitation. Sure, it may have worked on setting 5 for a period of time, but as cavitation builds, the impeller fins weaken until the pump needs to slow down some.

Think of the old skool strip mining using water funneling into a small opening. You ramp it up fast enough water will rip through steel easy as butter. Cavitation is when the water starts rebounding into itself of creating a vortex in the impeller creating more back pressure. Not good. mellowsmiley.gif
