What cooler should I get? Q6600

Thread Starter
Currently using a AC freezer xtreme but it gets a little hot on extended full load situations which is holding me back from folding.

72~75C when folding, it has blue screened 1 or 2 times when I left it on overnight.

I would shoot for the noctua but as this build is getting old I don't want to dump much more money on it.

However I would like to be able to overclock it more

For that kind of OC on LGA775 chips, I'd recommend a beefy and pretty high-end cooler to stay ahead of the game, since if you're ever going to upgrade your CPU, the cooler should have no problems handling even higher overclocks.

I would personally go for a Thermalright Silver Arrow or even a Corsair H80 if you want to completely take out high temps out of the equation. It is going to be quite costly, but it will be the best in the long run imo, especially if you have plans to upgrade within the future.

H5O will handle it just fine. Using one on my Q6600 @ 3.6GHz. A Hyper 212+ would be OK if you set it up to work with your case's 120mm exhaust.

Agreed on the H50. Been using mine for awhile also was at 3.6Ghz with similar volts as 2thAche.

I found that squeezing over 3.6ghz out of my Q6600 required a lot more voltage. Maybe I had a bad Q6600, but 3.7ghz required a lot more than 3.6ghz.

I really don't think the few extra mhz is worth the price. If it's just for folding, you can buy a cheap 8800 card for less than a cooler and you'd get more ppd.

this..

the bluescreen stuff is due what? low vcore? low nbvolt?bad timings? maybe go for a lower oc such 3.4ghz but with a lower multi and higher fsb, so you can get some extra power without strugglin the cpu too much?! look at my oc, maybe you will like that more?

scythe mugen 2 rev 2b will perform better and more quiet than the h50, even the prolimatech Megahalems rev b will doa similar work to the h50.. they both cost about 30$ + an additional fan i would buy for push/pull.. with the first mentioned cooler i ran my q9300 on 3.6ghz not going above 75°C core temps, even in summer but my flat is not on the sunny side.. cheers

Whatever the current Xigmatek HDT s1283 is called (I think the Dark Knight or something) is perhaps another option. I'm just throwing it out since it keeps my Core 2 Duo very cool even overclocked, and was a mid-higher end air cooler back in it's day.

You'll be able to use it now and with future platforms, so it's not really being dumped into your current setup. The bad thing is, it probably doesn't come with the LGA 775 back plate. It does come with LGA 775 mounting hardware, but when I got mine, it was push pins, so I grabbed the separate mounting back plate. It's like not available separately anymore, and maybe not included either, but check it. If it is and has mounting back plates for LGA 775 and more modern platforms, it's another option..
