I use it to test the strength of my network, its really good, I use it in VMware, loads of tools built in, just takes time to learn how to use all of them.

Basically if you need to label it in simple terms BT is essentially the hacker's delight of preconfigured distros. But you can get any of those programs to work in another distro. Hmmm...makes me think about getting John the Ripper or similar just for kicks

tons, but honestly you are better off finding out how to do specific attacks rather than "just learn backtrack"

i really dont suggest STARTING linux with backtrack, its HORRIBLE to start with for many reasons backtrack is basically a hackers tool kit, and thats all it should be used for

EDIT: and because of its specified use, its one of my favorite distros
Kinda meh now...

Agreed with the above. Decide what you are trying to do/learn specifically. If it's not related to security, particularly pen testing, don't use Backtrack. The distro is not designed to teach you how to use Linux, and it's not designed to hide the learning curve either. Backtrack assumes you know Linux.

There's a lot of stuff in Backtrack but for more than 99% of people the majority of it is useless bloat. For the remaining handful it's gold.

might wanna upgrade

i know people use bt3 and such due to bt4 and bt5 cutting out a lot of stuff in the live disc, but the newer versions do have some newer versions of tools

bt4r2 is the disc i normally use as it includes a fairly good amount of tools still
