Unable to mount 3TB external drive - Page 2

It looks like it doesn't like your external harddrive. Was it plugged in when you ran parted?

It is/was connected when I ran the previous commands. Earthquake aside (one just occurred where I'm at) it didn't work.

is the enclosure powered?

is the computer in question a laptop?

can other operating systems see and use the harddrive when it is plugged in?

Since my roommate is taking a nap... It is a laptop and the enclosure is powered. Windows 7 sees the harddrive and you can read and write to it normally.

fdisk seems to be the only who sees it. but it is only detecting it as 800GB.

imho i would think the enclosure is not fully supported by linux.

who is the manufacture of the enclosure, you could try updated kernel, to see if the kernel is the problem here.

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:kernel-ppa/ppa

sudo apt-get update

apt-cache showpkg linux-headers

(will provide a list of available new kernels, find the latest one here)

sudo apt-get install linux-headers- linux-headers--generic linux-image--generic --fix-missing

replace with the latest version available from apt-cache.

I was unable to update it using these commands. The enclosure is a USB 2.0 Rosewill enclosure found at the link below. I have reason to believe that the enclosure itself may have been damaged during shipping and am in the process of getting a USB 3.0 enclosure sent to my apartment.

Edit: The only evident damage is a broken bearing in the fan which makes the drive nearly unbearable to have on.

With todays release of 11.10 (stable) I am still unable to have my 3TB external drive recognized by Ubuntu. Any other recommendations?

Have you tried another distro? Use a liveCD to save messing about installing it. Give Fedora or plain ol' Debian a go

I thought that this would fix the problem by getting the stable release. It did not, but I am still looking for a solution.

Well I'm mostly new to Linux usage. Therefore I'm trying to ease my way into things and get used to an OS such as Ubuntu first. Most of my files are on the previously mentioned 3TB hard drive and it was recommended in the first quote that the alpha would be a solution. I unfortunately do not have another (smaller) HDD and thus have no other means of transferring the files over.

"NTFS signature is missing."

really basic troubleshooting flowchart here. no ntfs signature... what might that be and could we change something so that ntfs-3g no longer sees it as missing...

Id System
7 HPFS/NTFS

Id System
ee GPT

ID ee is not an NTFS signature. ntfs3g wants to see 7 to proceed.

WARNING: GPT (GUID Partition Table) detected on '/dev/sdb'! The util fdisk doesn't support GPT. Use GNU Parted.

Use parted to change the ID & label of the disk to 7, HPFS/NTFS.

OK now looking a little further I see that you ran parted and it said "partition outside the disk."

"Linux GPT Kernel Support

You must include GPT support in kernel in order to use GPT....if you are using Debian or Ubuntu Linux, you need to recompile the kernel. Set CONFIG_EFI_PARTITION to y to compile this feature."

Check your kernel config for

File Systems
Partition Types
[*] Advanced partition selection

[*] EFI GUID Partition support (NEW)

I believe there's also a few other options in there, I do remember "filesystems larger than 1TB" being an option, and you probably don't have that set either. Research for all the options you need to mount a large GPT partition, adjust your kernel config, rebuild and reboot. [it's not that hard] Then once you see it properly in parted, set the label & mount.
