Looking for a new OS

Thread Starter
Hey everyone,

I have a small 10" MSI U135 netbook that I use ocasionally at school for when our Water Polo team goes on trips and what not. Problem is, it is currently installed with Windows 7 Starter. Now, I'm not gonna complain, because Windows 7 works pretty well on here. The only problems I have is the limited memory on this thing can make Windows feel kinda restrictive at times.

Now I was thinking of either using one of the new Android distros, or a Linux distro. The only problem I have with either is hardware compatability. I need to make sure that the standard ethernet / wireless capabilities aren't lost if I make an OS switch. I also do not want to loose the F1-F12 + fn keys, because that is how I am able to control everything from the webcam to muting or changing the volume of the sound, to screen brightness.

That is why I come here, I need a distro that will keep ALL of my current functionality, while speeding up standard things from web browsing to text editing. That said, I also need one that can create text documents that are compatiable with MS Word and other office applications, because I will be using this for small text editing and web editing.

If anyone can help me out, that would be great.

Thank all!

Edit: Here is a link to the specifications of my netbook: http://www.msi.com/product/nb/U135.h...=Specification

Also, it does not have a CD Drive, so I NEED to be able to have something that can be installed from a flash drive. I also need to be able to back up my current installation completly in case something goes wrong; I want to be able to recover it.

TL;DR Specifications:

CPU: Intel Atom N450
RAM: 1GB Generic DDR2
HDD: 160GB
WLAN: 802.11 b/g/n

Jolicloud aka JoliOS is your best bet for netbooks. Yours should work out of the box. http://www.jolicloud.com/download

I had windows on my wife's netbook, but when I put this on there she didn't want windows anymore. She's not "used to" Linux. Anyone can use this OS with ease. It starts fast, suspends/sleeps perfectly, and automatically connects to any wireless network that you have connected to in the past. Its not an easily customized OS, which makes it odd for Linux. But what it does perfectly is everything Web based (its also cloud based), VLC Media player, GIMP (its like photo shop), and so on. Just don't expect to play games on it... because, lets get real, a netbook isn't for games.

The next decent alternative to Joli is Ubuntu Netbook Remix. Not everything may work OOTB or be as fast as Joli, but it is "full featured". Meaning it can do everything the regular Ubuntu can. I have this on my netbook. I had a bit of a challenge, if you'd like a read check my sig about it... although its an older version its pretty darn close to the most recent LTS version.

I suggest,don't go Linux.

Instead if you purchase a SSD,windows will fill a lot faster.

RAM would still be a problem @ above post.

Also use Jolicloud or a Linux netbook or low spec distribution. Good luck!

Yeah, there is no way in hell I'm spending money on my netbook. I don't even want to spend the money for an SSD in my rig, so that is not gonna happen.

Thanks for the reply though.

More Info

wireless fix

seems ubuntu is quite compatible with this model of the netbook. reading some other post, seem to denote that the fn+f# keys continue to work like they should.

11.04 seems to have a slight issue with the wireless, but i found 1 possible fix for it in my searches.

goodluck.

I'd use either Mint or Xubuntu. JoliOS is great too.
