Need some help deciding...

Thread Starter
Ok, I've been spending the last few weeks compiling a parts list for a gaming rig I'm going to be putting together (see the system in my sig). I'm going to be overclocking my CPU to 4.5ghz and, of course, I need a decent HSF. There are a wide variety of products out there and everyone has their personal favorite but I've more or less got it narrowed down to a few potential choices (size is NOT an issue as I've got a Cooler Master HAF X case and some low profile Mushkin RAM - I'm also not extremely concerned about spending $30 vs. say $80 or $90 for a good cooler):

1. The Cooler Master Hyper 212+ http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835103065 (still dunno if I'd just buy a second Blademaster for push/pull or get two entirely new fans). This one gets a lot of good reviews and it's relatively cheap. I'm not going to be pushing my CPU beyond 4.5ghz and I've read articles from numerous tech review sites that the figure is easily achievable with the 212+.

2. The Noctua NH-D14 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835608018&Tpk=noctua%20nh-d14 This one seems to be the general consensus (it or maybe the Silver Arrow) pick among people with air cooled rigs. Like I said, size and to a certain extent, price are not issues for me as I know the NH-D14 is both rather large and a little on the expensive side. I have no issues whatsoever paying extra for a better cooler if it's really going to make a significant difference in my 4.5ghz OC temperatures. The only reason I'm hesitant to get the Noctua is because it's beige (yes, I know this is POINTLESS in the grand scheme of things but it bugs me biggrin.gif ).

3. The Zalman CNPS 11X http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835118091&Tpk=zalman%20cnps11x I don't know much about this HSF but it looks pretty sweet and it gets some good reviews. Noctua gets a lot of attention for the NH-D14 but I'm not against going outside of the mainstream if it means I'm still getting a good product (plus it looks better than beige).

I've looked at other coolers such as the Genesis, Megahelms, and the Silver Arrow and I'm open to suggestion - just need some feedback hopefully from people who have experience with said coolers smile.gif

Don't know anything about the Zalman but IF you do get the Noctua get it from Here . I got TY-140's from Directron for my NH-D14 and painted them black

Same with additional fans. Better selection and prices despite shipping.

well if you can afford the d14, you could also get the H100, i think it would be just as good, if you can fit that is. if not your choices are either d14 or silver arrow, it doesn't seem like you have much of a budget limit so get either of those, whichever is cheaper

Why Hyper212+ if you can afford D14 or Silver Arrow? I know the D14 and Silver Arrow is huge compare to 212+, but their performance are far beyond the 212+.

If you'd like something neat and clean-look, it's a great idea to look for Corsair H100. With 4 fans push-pull, it will freeze your processor tho...
