As for the PSU, a quality 750W unit would be up to the job rather easily.
I know, but he may want SLI later.

Hahaha! $200 video cards and $1800 totals?

For Skyrim?! No.

CPU/Mobo: waiting for one of Microcenter's combo deals with the 2500k would be the best option. I got my 2500k/P67B+ for $240. (You could get a slightly more expensive board for 8/8 CFX).

GPU: A GTX580 SLI is a solid choice, I guess, if you're gonna rock Crysis on Ultra High on 2650 x 1600 res. For Skyrim, a GTX460/560 should suffice on 1080 res.

PSU: 1050W? Are you kidding me? A decent 750W will run all this crap EASILY. You're not going octo-core tri-fire here.

RAM is cheap. Get 8 GB.

SSD? ROFL. WD Blacks, Seagates, F3s and the like will do nicely, as others have so aptly suggested.

Get a nice budget case since he doesn't care about the premium stuff. Like an Antec 300 or NZXT or CM690 or something like that.

The rest should be self-explanatory; good luck!

PS: of course, we're all speculating to a degree on Skyrim's hardware requirements, but that game is not a technical wonder. An incremental step above Oblivion, and still runnable on consoles.

Looks solid to me! I dig the combo of 2500k and 570GTX, a solid choice .
The PSU is WAY sufficient for dual-SLI (source).

That's fair, we definitely are speculating. A 460gtx will probably be fine...but if he has such a large budget, why skimp? Morrowind and Oblivion were both damn pretty for their time, and I remember upgrading my GPU for both.

ps: The console thing has be puzzled, though, and you're right: it has to run on current consoles.

Just something I know about battlefield 3 was that the test rigs at E3 were running a 580 (AMP! Edition I believe) and they were getting 70 frames at 1080p. A 580 1.5GB Vram should suffice for running Skyrim at 1080p anything higher 3GB Vram.
(I Believe.)

I'm building a rig for Skyrim and BF3 pretty soon here myself, and I've been doing my research.
What I've decided to go with is:

Corsair 500R/CM 690 II
2-3 additional 120/140 fans
Intel 2500K
Gigabyte Z68X-UD3H-B3
Corsair H80
Corsair TX750M
Mushkin Blackline 2X4GB DDR3-1600
WD Caviar Black 1TB
Crucial M4 128GB SSD
MSI GTX 570 Twin Frozr III PE/OC
Sony Optiarc 24X DVD-RW (Only one I can find that has a full black faceplate)

I have the same budget, but I'm including speakers, a mouse & pad, keyboard, router, and monitor. If I removed a few of those things I'd probably upgrade the case to a RV02-E or FT02, and the GPU to a single 580.

Way to big of a psu, and within the budget you could get three 1080p monitors and two gtx570s 2.5gb of ram as well as the same motherboard and the RV03, that system will make gaming a new experience for him

see for details
